Roots

This is a close up of the roots of a majestic Douglas Fir that went down in the flooding of the Carbon River, Nov. 2006. I don't know exactly how old a tree that is over 6 ft. in diameter is, but I do know it's a couple of hundred years at least. These strong roots have held this tree up for a long time and must have endured many things, but the river eventually proved too much. As in all forests of the world, this grand old tree will take it's place in the nourishment of the other trees. It also opened up a huge hole in the canopy allowing light to reach the forest floor. Many trees fell in the 3 day storm, large and small. I'm just glad there are still many gigantic, old-growth trees left to enjoy.

Love this. I have one similar in black and white that I took on the Olympic Penninsula. Maybe I'll dig it out and send it to you.
