He was considered the first Renaissance King of France and began the collection of art now in the Louvre. He was a contemporary of Henry VIII whom he famously met at the Field Of The Cloth of Gold with the aim of forging an alliance, though the discussions came to nothing. His reign also saw the beginning of years of religious persecution and conflict in France due to the Reformation.
