A Grandma's Touch

I saw this touching scene today and finally understood why Molly feels that she can transform Lillian into a good witch. After Molly learned that dogs can be therapy dogs about two years old, she was so disappointed that she could not fulfill her dream to help the elderly in nursing homes, many who have few friends and family that visit them for numerous reasons. Her bond with Lillian has only reinforced her understanding of how helpful she can be in the role of therapy dog given her very loving, comforting and sweet personality. She asked Lillian if she could start school now and I heard Lillian who now sports a lovely bracelet tell Molly that she is in the same position as children in elementary school; that possibly her youthful exuberance could overwhelm the many people who would delight in seeing her precious and adoring face after she starts training In September when she is two years old. Molly has no interest in what she was bred to do. Retrieving birds has little interest for her and she is even too sensitive to cope with the fact that the sport of hunting exists. Being a very people oriented dog, this makes sense, especially after learning how dogs are used for therapeutic purposes with remarkable results. The other day I was surprised to find a baby bird that must have died placed neatly between my books in my bookcase, the exact height of Molly. She often brings things inside the house like rocks, twigs and even flowers that I believe she considers a gift to us. I think in her mind she was finding a proper burial spot for this little bird that was fully intact without any evidence that there was any harm inflicted on him or her. Setters have very soft mouths so they can retrieve birds without injuring them since hunters want their prey intact. Molly was very perplexed by this since she could not understand if hunting wildlife is legal, why after killing a bird would the hunter be so concerned about its post mortem appearance? When I walked into to this poignant scene, Lillian was speculating that hunters find pride in their "sport" and may want to display a large bird like a quail for peer approval or for sporting competitions. Lillian's intentions were good like any loving Grandmother, but Molly still had trouble accepting why anyone would want to shot a living creature? She is so inquisitive and won't stop until she gets a satisfying answer. The fact that she took such good care of the baby bird is the main issue as pointed out by Lillian and reinforced by Mikey and me who also was bred for hunting. He likes the chase much more than the capture since squirrels and lizards are his favorite "toys," I think her display of affection towards the Boglins has shown her attraction and love for reptiles. In fact, she wants to visit Joanna Jungjohann , a member of AW and cousin to our Boglin swamp creatures. She especially is eager to make friends with Nebo, her adorable bearded dragon as she considers him one of her favorite cousins although she is fond of all her reptile relatives who she sleeps with on rotation to give them the maternal attention she thinks they need. I assured Molly that when she is two years old; we will start her training and visit various pet assisted therapy programs to choose which group she wants to join. Dogs actually go through Graduation just like guide dogs for the blind after completing the course given by the Delta Society. Since, Mikey is now retir ed, M olly has strong feelings that she must continue the legacy of helping lonely and disadvantaged people and is counting the days until she meets the smiling face of her first client.

The time will fly by Molly...before you know it you will be old enough to go...I promise. In the meantime you can dream about all the new friends you will have when you do get there and how much joy you will bring them. But for now you bring that joy to Mommy and Daddy and Lillian and even Mikey. :)
