Celtic circle of Life

This form of a `Tree of Life' suggests because of the vegetation, Pictish influences, also previously would have been found sprouting from a pot, also carries the traditional beleif in the comlexity and length of interweaving lines to that of longevity`Eternal Life'. This Ink and Brush work is my adaptation from the `Kells Manuscript(plate XIV) originally less than 2 inches in diameter, it contains on close inspection, 4 plants bearing fruit and foliage, 8 birds, 4 reptiles, 4 beasts, Hope you enjoy finding them! 12 x 12 inches.

Beautful Drawing Cathy. I did a few similar (but not as complex) designs on some wine glasses and baked them in the oven. I did my eyes in, so no more intricate work for me. This must've taken ages to do. Well done.

Artist Reply: Does my eyes in too, start seeing lines where there is no lines and drawing in lines where lines shouldn't be! Thank you kathie

Charles Jones 20 May 2007

The shamrock lynch pins hold the whole thing together while the animals keep it taunt, eh? If you study each quadrant you see differences as well as similarities. So much inter-connectedness. I guess that sums up 'life' pretty well, Cathy. Very good!

These are fascinating and meticulous works of art. They appear Celtic in inspiration and could be off an illuminated manuscript. It is interesting to take this ancient art form and make it modern again. Your icons are also very nice.

Ed Fairburn 26 Apr 2007

I love this, I used to paint and draw celtic art a lot. I love the fact that each piece has a particular meaning. I think the construction can be quite mathematical as well, and being a naturally mathematical person, I enjoyed that. Do you illuminate text at all? Thanks for your kind comments. Ed :)

Artist Reply: Thank you so much Ed, do do illuminated text, but mainly for commoission. Not too much mathmatical work or the knotworks don't fit so you have to cheat to make ends meet. if your inerterested in math then you may be interested to know, that has been recently dicovered that the Celtic cross, could well have been originally designed as a mathmatic measuring device! Good Luck with your Exam!
