Karie, We both love California beaches. Being a native Californian and loving our spectular seascapes, I love how you captured what I believe is a sandpiper. Owning Irish and English Setters, I have become aware of all the birds as my dogs delight in the chase knowing they don't have the wings to catch these precious little birds. The seagulls are very abundant as the sandpipers mingle among them. I just uploaded some photos of my favorite place on this planet knowing and living on the most beautiful beaches in Malibu. You captured a great shot of this elegant little bird.
I agree with Emily that it's sandpiper-ish, but without knowing the size, it's difficult to pin down. And the backlighting makes the colors (e.g., the legs) a bit indistinct. So based on length and straightness of beak, overall coloring, it could be a sandpiper (who knows which one, though?) or a lesser yellowlegs. Whatever it is, it's a pretty shot.
