Midnight Dreamer Studio This is the first in my new series~ "Can I Live Here Too?" I am embarking on my journey to help the animals that have just as much of a right to live here as we do.....sad to say that baby seals like this are clubbed to death to be skinned, everyday at alarming numbers, these helpless innocent babies anywhere from 12 to 28 weeks are being murdered in terribly painful ways....I saw in a video called Earthlings, not only did they club the baby to death, they tossed its mangled body to the side where I watched the mother seal morning her baby, I felt her pain, you could see it in her eyes....she was so beside herself in the loss of her baby....I cant for the life of me understand this, I am crying at this very moment....its not fair...that is why for every print I sell of any of the "Can I Live Here Too?" series I am giving 50% of the proceeds to the Defenders of Wildlife...I cant sit here and not do anything any more...please help me teach people the importance of animals and their right to live..... And if you want to know how you can help here is some info~ Please take a moment to read about this important issue, and join me in signing the petition. It takes just 30 seconds, but can truly make a difference. We are trying to reach 50,000 signatures - please sign here: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/492975274 Once you have signed, you can help even more by asking your friends and family to sign as well. Leah, Thanks for your nice comment on my posting. I love your Can I Live Here Too Series. The story of what you witnessed on Earthlings is horrifying & sad, tears roll down my face as I write this thinking of that kind of brutality on an innocent, helpless animal. I recently saw videos of animal cruelty beyond my wildest imagination, I can't imagine how a person could be so cruel. As bad as it was to witness & so many times I wanted to look away, I am glad I saw them as it changed my life forever, I have not eaten meat in over a month & know in my heart I never will again, I have changed to soy milk & won't eat eggs etc, I don't want to participate in that kind of animal cruelty ever again & am ashamed I did for 27 yrs of my life. I am now more conscientious to products I buy. I have always been an animal lover with no prejudice & am embarrassed to be part of human kind who is greedy & selfish & has no problems taking more then our share of this planet. I fear, most humans won't care until it is humans who are at risk to be extinct, which at the rate we are going is inevitable. I do what I can for animals & have and will continue to donate to such conservation organizations such as WWF. The world needs more people such as yourself & I commend your efforts. Keep doing what your doing, even if you can only reach even a small percentage of people, educating people is key, most people love animals & would frown upon such cruelty however need to be educated of the reality of what humans do to this world & the fabulous animals we are supposed to be SHARING it with, not using as if they don't feel pain & don't deserve to live. Just imagine if a human baby was clubbed & thrown aside for its mother to weep, just imagine what people would think of that, why is it any different if it is a seal. Anyway , I could go on forever .. Beautiful work you are doing here, I will be on the look out for more.

The mentality of this day seems to be if its not human than it life doesn't count which is a sorry state of affairs. It seems only ancient and primitive peoples respect all living things, and we talk about being civilized.

Kim Lawrie 30 Apr 2007

sheila stanley-powell 07 Apr 2007

this just takes my breath away.boggles the mind in this day and age where synthetic furs are so incredibly life-like(what irony THAT is) and synthetics are so much warmer than pelts there truely is NO excuse. we are an incredibly selfish, short sighted species.

Mary Ashton 05 Apr 2007

Oh so sweet and beautiful, but oh so sad Leah. Beautifully drawn. Consider it done. Mary

Angie Swihart 04 Apr 2007

Such a sweet face! I have been watching that new series "Planet Earth".... this reminds me of the Arctic episode where they showed animals that live in frozen areas of the world...including the Polar bear (of course) Was heart breaking to see that they are starving because of the ice melting earlier. I'm sure these little guys must be impacted as well. Keep up the good work!

Artist Reply: I am glad you like my work my friend! I feel bad because these baby seals are being murdered everyday for their skin, I am thinking it was yesterday that the huge seal hunt started....they are out there as we speak mass murdering these babies for their skin....

Bev Chudey 03 Apr 2007

Lea, another outstanding portrait of an animal very much in need. I contradulate you with all my passion for this cause. I am going to sign the petition as i try to do anything I can to prevent cruelty to these innocent and amazing creatures. Seeing them in distress is an image one never forgets, and it is is excrusiatingly painful for me to watch the brutalty committed by mankind for their evil and consumming purposes. I was renting a house in Malibu on a cliff above the beach, the house having a long stairway down to the ocean. I heard people yelling up to me and saw the crowded around a baby animal. I flew down the stairs so fast I thought I was flying. I saw a light tan baby seal with these huge brown eyes breathing hard that had been washed on the shore after losing its mother. It seemed to have pnemonia and we did did not have much time. One man called the harbor partrol and we put the baby in the blanket and again we all ran as fast as we posssibly could. The baby was on the grass with these helpless eyes. It was one of those moments you don't forget. I have seen many seals and sea lions in Malibu and mainly in Northern California, but this was not a thriving animal, but one we hoped could make it in time to the hospital. I think of those large rounded eyes as a symbol for all the baby animals crying out for their lost parents. As you pointed out,it is not only the babys that are in terrible danger, but they can not survive after their parents are brutally killed. It takes a lot of courage to watch those movies. I have seen the horrifying conditions we put animals through before we heartlessly kill them and more than 20 years ago made the decision not to eat meat after feeling what I was doing, not thinking about it. I know Linda MacCarney before she died lived with Paul on a farm and once she got to now the animals, the lamb, the sheep, the cattle, she wrote a vegertarian cookbook describing how living with animals changed her perspective. They no longer were packages in the market;they were living and feeling animals with as much right to live on our planet as we do. We can control the population and stop those horrifying puppy mills if we choose life over financial gail. Of course I could rant all day about this, but the important thing is how impressed I am with you to take such an important stand that impacts us all in ways most people don't understand that also affects our ecosystem and global warming as we destroy our land to build plants to make cars and other consumer products in the rain forest. There is a chain of events and although people may not care like we do about precious animal life, they are also destructive to their own by threatening the planet we life in. You go girl!!! I love your drawings and the messages you are conveying to so many ignorant people that have no idea of the crisis that exists in our world!

Artist Reply: Oh Julie, your memories of the baby seal are sad to hear, but it is so wonderful to hear that so many people were there and ready to help this baby....I wish I could change the way the world thinks...like you said if people were more worried about the right to exist instead of worried about how much money they make or what kind of car they drive...having the best body and the biggest boobs...it is just so hard for me to sit and watch people in their every day life....going on living in a cloud of oblivion because its just easier for them not to think about anything but themselves....its easier to live with yourself I guess....I have always been an animal lover and always will be one...I just hope and pray that my message gets out to a few people.....thank you Julie for your constant support and love that you send to me.....

All of the northern populations of large predators are in trouble. Polar bears are dying off, in addition to these wonderful seals. It is a very sad thing, and EVERYONE must be vigilant to prevent these abuses, in addition to helping relieve the effects of global warming. Thank you, Leah!

It is indeed amazing just how powerful a weapon ignorance is (referring to the clubbing of seals) and doing a series such as this is equally as powerful in a positive way. Excellent work.

Adorable work Leah!

Vivian Gutierrez 31 Mar 2007

so cute...I love it and I am with you in animal protection

Katerina Koukiotis 31 Mar 2007

beautiful series leah!! I dont know if you watch Oprah yesterday she had a show about animals discussing a Discovery channel series about animals and she said something similar you did that animals have every right to live here as we do and we share this planet/world with them .

Robin Brown 30 Mar 2007

Good luck with the journey. I have very little faith in mankind. There is space for all the creatures on this planet & even if there wasn't mankind is duty bound to make space. Sadly you only have to look at the planet & the way man is destroying it; to realise its doomed. Excellent image of one of the many creatures persecuted by man's greed for more than his share of the resources.

Aileen McLeod 30 Mar 2007

Beautifully done. He tears at my heart strings.

THIS IS BEAUTIFUL LEAH AND SOO SAD THE LOOK OF PAIN ON THE SEALS FACE. GOD BLESS YOU FOR WHAT YOU ARE DOING TO, BAD THEY ARE NOT MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT HAS A HEART AND SEE THE CRUELTY THAT IS DONE TO ALL OF THE BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS ON EARTH. I TOLD MY HUSBAND IF I HAD THE AUTHORITY AND MONEY MAYBE I COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE. I WHISH THEY WERE LESS PEOPLE AND MORE ANIMALS. THERE IS THIS COMMERICAL LEAH THAT IS ON THIS ONE CHANNEL AND IT SHOWS DOGS AND CATS THAT HAVE BEEN SAVED AND THEN SHOWS THE ONES WHO HAVE LOST EYES AND LIMBS, THAT THEY WERE TO LATE TO SAVE I CRY EVERYTIME I SEE IT.ALL OF THESE PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY LOOK GOOD WEARING FUR SHAME ON THEM TO, FAKE FUR LOOKS JUST AS GOOD. ALL WHO TREAT ANIMALS LIKE THIS WILL ONE DAY BE PAIDED BACK THEIRSELVES. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK LEAH, GOD WILL BLESS YOU FOR IT.

Artist Reply: Good morning Debbie :) Thank you so much for your sweet comment, just because they cant speak for themselves doesn't mean that they have less of a right to live here :) Thank you for loving animals my friend :)

helen tyralik 29 Mar 2007

lovely pencil work

Gerald Dextraze 29 Mar 2007

you see this is a crop like for beef of pigs or chiken or any animal we eat... what you have seen on tv was made by those who made the film... they just want to emphasize their claim of this crop... go directly on the site yourself you will understand better that this reporting is all about make believe for money... if seals are left to grow in larger quantities you could miss fish in your dish very soon.

Artist Reply: Gerald I cant believe you would leave such a load of horse manure underneath my artwork....You think i am some little girl who saw a little tv show and is on a save the animal trip, sorry what i saw wasn't on TV.....and its people with your narrow minded point of view who have no conscience.....the baby seals that are killed because of selfish human reasoning is just a small part of what we are doing to our planet and those who have to live with us......the rate these babies are being killed, their species wont be around for too much longer.....and its the selfish human race who is doing this and most with your attitude of 'who cares'.....the natural order and law keeps the seals population in check, we dont need to go out of our way to brutal beat babies and skin them alive in front of their family.....at this rate we will kill of any 'inconvenience' for profit, exploitation, entertainment....we are killing the very ecosystem that keeps us alive....and most people dont care about the trash they are leaving behind for the next generation to have to clean up....not too mention we are killing all the beauty of this world and it will be so sad when our great grandchildren will only be able to read about the animals that once were.....

Anonymous Guest 28 Mar 2007

awww, leah, and to think what we do to these lovely sea babies for fashion.....
