This is a portrait of James Crowden, a very distinguished man, with achievements in many fields, including a European Championships gold medal for rowing in the 1950s. He was Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire for ten years at the end of which he was awarded the CVO. He was Master of the Company of Watermen in London the 1990s and coached 20 Cambridge crews. He is a senior steward at Henley Royal Regatta. The photograph on the table is of his late son Richard. The background is his home town of Wisbech, in Cambridgeshire.
