Here comes the storm

Earlier in the week, I captured a dust storm as it was approaching. The sky was gorgeous as the sun was setting, adding even more color to the storm. Usually, a dust storm out here in the day can have a tan to bright orange color to it. This one has all sorts due to the sunsetting, and mixing with storm clouds and clear sky as well. I wanted to take more photos of it as it approached, but there was too much sand to damage my lens, and it hits you like sandpaper, as well as blows small rocks in the air from the wind. Not to mention all the lightning. It knocked power out for a few hours, but I used our solar back up power. Sometimes, we're the only onlys with power for the night. This is a small corner of my property, along the fence. Lots of barren ara, but we park and turn the cars around on this part.

A great catch Terry.

Artist Reply: Thanks Reba, I ducked in the door right after as the winds kicked up.

great photo, a bit scary!

Artist Reply: Thanks Virginia! These strms were awesome to see coming! This one knocked the power out, but I had solar back up. The dust in the air can be awful, gets in the house. I've moved to the mountains of California right now, so will be looking for more and different storms to photograph.

Beautiful work.. Well done.

Artist Reply: Thank you Nikolay! Just lucky to be armed with a camera at the right time.

debbie collier 13 Sep 2006

Beautifully done!!! The colors are great!!

Artist Reply: Thanks Debbie! I get more rain than most of the Valley of the SUn. I'm out of the city, where the heat flowing up off of the streets, sidewalks, and roof tops produce a heat island that pushes clouds back. So...they come my way.

what a storm...

Artist Reply: It was a cool one, and so colorful. They tend to hit as it's cooling down out here, or after sunset.

teresa greene 13 Sep 2006

Great capture

Artist Reply: Thanks Theresa! I love how the desert is always full of surprizes.

Jess Murray 13 Sep 2006

Wonderful colors an awesome shot

Artist Reply: Thanks Jess! I'll try to capture a dust devil if I can. THey form at the bottom and spiral up like a tornado. They are frequent out here. They have actually been known to move a park car a few inches.

cynthia berridge 13 Sep 2006

brilliant capture

Artist Reply: Thank you Cynthia! Sometimes when I'm out in my car, I have to out run a dust storm. They can get so thick you can not drive. Beautiful to see, amazing to see a wall of dust coming towards you.

Nelly van Nieuwenhuijzen 13 Sep 2006

marvellous moment and great shot, Terry!!

Artist Reply: Thanks Nelly! While the desert can be seen as barren at times, it is very fertile. Just add water. There is water underground, like lakes. If I water, it grows well. It nice to have flowers in the winter months. Everything is greening up now from the rains, and cooling from end of summer heat.

Artist Reply: Thank you Jacqueline! Hope to capture some more sky scenes. Another storm building up today.
