crippled foundation

30"x 48" mixed media. Heavily influenced by the work of Donald Judd,in his work he repeatedly shows the raw power of perfection through the simplest of compositions. In my personal favorite piece of his "Untitled(copper, enamel, & aluminum)" he displays this perhaps the best with a simple box... The basic composition of "crippled foundation"is simple enough to be easily perfected, though due to the crack the whole structures integrity suffers... With this i was trying to reflect on jimmys life, displaying how one incident has affected the rest of his life... There is more to the reflection on Judds work, Judd himslf was a minimalist that "sought to remove the artist from the creative equation", and because of this often did not physically put his work together... Since this is a reflection on jimmys life, is meant to reflect on his belief that his own hand was not involved in the creation of his life, which is meant to show his strong belief in fate, it is this blind faith that there is a reason for everything that has gotten him through some of the darkest times of his life...

I think the Millers collectively said so much of what I felt after reading your statement, Derek. When I simply take in the visual piece, I, like all, have that personal relationship with it. I see hope, actually. That just as we can be damaged, we can repair ourselves and become whole. I also see how the breaks and scars of experience are so very beautiful as part of who we are. I think this is a really fantastic work of art.
