Artist Reply: Actually, I avoid the smudge tool like the plauge. This was done in Painter 8 using the "Gouache" brushes. Some people do well by the smudge tool, but many rely on it entirely too much and expect it to do all of their shading for them, like the blender tools in traditional media.
