The Hoary Marmot

These furry creatures are found in the alpine meadows of the mountains (above 5000 ft). They live in burrows under big rocks and in rockfalls. This lovely lady's home is only 8 ft. from the trail at Sunrise and occasionally you find her begging for food. She is the exception, most others that you see are off trail, they don't mind humans but don't interact with them much. The marmot is the size of a very large domestic cat. Sometimes, especially in the fall, you hear them whistle...

They are first cousins to the Woodchuck. I had 2 of the latter as pets, and they sure DO whistle, loud enough to break an ear drum. Nice catch, Mary!
