Lookdowns

The Lookdown is a member of the jack family of fish, and are named Lookdown for obviously reasons. These fish are found in shallow water(less than fifteen feet) generally associated with man made structures. The attached pictures were taken underneath a pier in south Florida. A slow approach with little movement allows a diver to get right in the middle of a large school(several hundreds of individuals)and be surrounded as the school circles around and around. This fish points out one of the challenges of underwater photography, i.e. the need for underwater strobes due to loss of light even at shallow depths. This species allows a close approach, however the silver body(like taking a picture of a mirror)makes taking a well exposed picture very difficult.
