Boston: East From the State House ca. 1875

This is a 22"x30" watercolor that was commissioned by the Marriott Hotel Corporation in 1987 for their hotel in Newton, MA. It was one of eight watercolors that were commissioned and presently hang in the foyer of the Grand Ballroom. This is a view that shows the Boston Waterfront prior to the Great Fire of 1876 which destroyed most of the buildings in this view including the central Post Office which can be seen in the upper right hand corner with the Mansard roof next to the church steeple. The Massacheussetts State House from which this scene is viewed was painted bright canary yellow. I painted this work from layout to its signing in nine days. I did not use a projector. The layout was done freehand with the aid of a straight edge, and I was able to complete the entire eight painting commission in a few days shy of three months. The commision consisted of four paintings 22"x30" and four 14"x20" paintings. I painted 12-14 hours a day for three months. With work habits like that it explains why I had to have two major operations on my spine 16 years later.
