The Flight By Night: Los Angeles, California ca. 1

This painting shows the corner of 3rd and Hill Sts. circa 1936. Here at this corner stood Angel's Flight. It was a funicular railroad and was the shortest incorporated railroad in the world. It was in operation from January 2, 1901 until May 19 1969. It was a much beloved landmark for 70 years without an accident or injury when it was taken down and stored to make way for the Bunker Hill Development project. In 1995 it was rebuilt and reopened a half block south of its original location. It ran up Bunker Hill to the new California Plaza complex. I was one of three artists who were invited to the grand reopening of this landmark to exhibit my body of work of old Los Angeles. In 2001, after almost 6 years of operation, a man was killed when the cable broke and the cars crashed at the bottom at Hill Street. It has been closed ever since. This is one of the most thoroughly researched pieces I have ever done. One can see advertisements in the window of the Angel's Flight Market. The prices I put in those ads were those prices for which those items sold in 1936.
