Alligator Juniper is from the Cypress Family. It is native to the Southwest, mostly in the dry ranges of Arizona and New Mexico, with elevations of 5000 to 7500 feet. The bark is gray-black and resembles the skin of an alligator, giving this tree its unusual name. The trees are several hundred to over one thousand years old and grow to over 100 feet tall, with bases over 8 feet in diameter. Taken in Madera Canyon, Arizona. Nikon D70.
