Bencoolen Street

I will start this series of Singapore's vanishing scenes This row of pre-war shop houses had been torn down, made way for high rise buildings. This was one of my most memorable sketch, I was waiting for the rain to stop and coincidentally I met this trishaw man sleeping in the pavement. Trishaw riders are vanishing trade too!

I love how you've painted this scene. It is very quiet and removed from the rainy street where you painted a heavy vehicle traffic. Such a contrast.

Artist Reply: The street is very narrow, the water somtimes splashed on to the pavement when the traffic passed by.

Incrediable atmosphere in this painting... I love seeking shelter and waiting for the rain... the sites, sounds and wonderful memories that stay with you a long time.. You have captured this so perfectly Francis! every detail!! your use of the washed out effect for the rain, and the shine of the rain on the pavement, the shadows where you and the Trishaw rider were waiting the rain out... Wow! Masterful watercolour painting!! :o)

Artist Reply: Thank you Les, your comments is very detail..I appreciate it.

I like how you did the adjoining street witht he cycle & vehicles its like a faint movie screen flashing by....

Artist Reply: This is a wet-on-wet technique, using very light colours on the wet surface.

I really like the way you faded out the cars on the right hand corner. Just a suggestion of what is there now, lets you imagine what used to be there when Trishaw riders were in their hay day.

Artist Reply: These row of shop houses was once a very busy place, where shop keepers, provision shop, sidelane barber, hawkers, tailor and coffeeshop etc, children running around the pavements.....Now it had been replaced with high rise buildings.
