Homeless in Portland

I saw this man on Burnside Street in Portland, Oregon. I couldn't shake the image of him, so finally I painted it. The homeless population in Portland is so large it's become a subculture existing simultaneously with the rest of us, but somewhat under the radar of most people. They've developed clans and families, rules, and mores, and a barter system. I believe if a revolution occurs, it will rise up from this population rather than the comfortable middle class. After all, they've got nothing left to lose. And their numbers continue to grow as more and more average people are forced into the streets. I imagine that it is their visible invisibility to the general public that is their greatest weapon. The powers that be won't see it coming. The harsh conditions under which they live give them the savy of feral cats. It's only wishful thinking on my part, but I do belive these people we've cast aside may be the force to change what we political and social activists are unable to. This is my tribute to all the really cool homeless people I met while living in Portland. I wanted to create that sense of hidden in plain site, not an eyesore, just faded into the scenery.
