It has been postulated that mankind (or man unkind, as I sometimes like to call him) is the result of the seeding of earth by extraterrestrials. And geneticists say that a good portion of the population carries neanderthal DNA which strongly suggests they didn't die out but actually merged with modern (I use the term loosely) man.
