The Challenge/Homage

By the end of the Saal'Ku/Dari Saga, there was considerable enmity between Kathra Noor and Dromi Ahreis Khral. Kathra had always despised the xaersi government, for the enslavement of her homeworld to their involvement in her parents' deaths. Ahreis believed that Kathra was responsible for his son Reylan's death at the close of the Syrani War, though it was really Saal'Ku who killed him. Nevertheless, after Kathra's escape from Khursinhi with the Crimson Nova and her brother, she stayed out of the Dro'Xaren Ephex, roaming the nations of the Free Pirate Confederacy and the Terran League instead. Until she was driven back, not of her own free will. When her brother went missing, Kathra and the Nova crew scoured the FPC for him, but ran into problems of their own. And when they finally discovered his whereabouts, imprisoned on Thunisk's frozen moon of Wyse, it took so long to get there that he had already gone, having allied with human soldier Melissa Consair to overthrow the insane braken ex-general Erathyl. However, their liberation and subsequent expulsion from Wyse was not without cost. Warships of the Federation of Sirius, long hating the Dro'Xaren Ephex for past wrongs, and believing Kiril and Azan to be spies for the Ephex, chased them across the border, where they were discovered and arrested. Melissa and Azan were sent to retreive Kathra and to tell her that the Dromi would release Kiril in exchange for her. She agreed, and headed to Xarsil to free her brother. However, things, as always, wouldn't go as planned. Interrupting both the prisoner exchange and the Nova's plans to free both siblings, Daera arrived, attacking Kathra and slaughtering the dozens of Seekers that tried to protect the Dromi. Inadvertently serving as a diversion to get Kathra and Kiril away from the Dromi, Daera nevertheless brought herself to the attention of Ahreis Khral as a threat greater than any other he, or anyone else in Takisi Garden, for that matter, had ever faced, and he resolved to end it. Though Kathra and Kiril managed to evade capture for a few days in the home of Ukren and Chieba Abasa, posing as poor renjiri merchants awaiting the arrival of a friend, Daera relocated them and nearly killed them all. Only the timely arrival of the Seekers saved their lives, but Kathra and Kiril were once more prisoners of the Dromi. However, Ahreis told them he was willing to put their quarrel aside in return for their aid in either capturing or killing Daera, but he promised Kathra that he would avenge his son on her some day. After their battle with Daera and the near destruction of the entire city of Karos, Ahreis gave Kathra his atenoxen, a blade he had kept as a maturity gift for his now-dead son. He praised her courage and told her that he would release her for her help in saving his home, but someday they would meet again and the challenge would end.
