love this bird...I've never seen it before...what is ist name ?
Artist Reply: thank you Thomas . This is an EUROPEAN GREEN WOODPECKER (PICUS VERIDIS) It spends much of its time feedind on ants on the ground and doesn't of drum on the trees like other wood pecker species; it is a shy bird but usually draws attention with its loud calls
Now this is what I call a redhead, a real attention getter, but whose attention is it seeking, certainly not the grubs. I assume this is a woodpecker? Great close-up.
Terrific photos, these guys when they start there Pecking, wow the echo, can be heard miles away, when one starts another one joins in,amazing how they find there grub worms in the tree bark just by putting there ear to the bark they can hear the worm moving around ,just like our Robins, just wonderful birds even though they make that early morning noise.,,but they are not always in trees there food is on the ground too. There so so many varieties of these little creatures, some more handsomer then others ,with more red plumage .You have no snow ,all those snow flakes from the other day have melted away,if this is a current photo.,No struggle for these guys in the winter.
