This is a colored pencil painting that I did based on an old slide picture taken by my father-in-law many, many years ago. The scene is a medow that could be seen outside the window of their home, the home where my wife grew up. My father-in-law is now gone, but the scene is still memorable. The dimensions of the piece are 8 inches X 10 inches. It was done with Prismacolor Verithin pencils on matte surfaced Dura-lar polyester film. The piece is backed with black Cranson board to allow the snow cover to show up more brightly. The winter can be long and I hope that this piece can add some sense of enjoyment to this season.

This is lovely, Will! I particularly like the color combinations that really say "cold Winter".

Artist Reply: Barbara: thank you so much for your very nice comments. This is the first piece that I backed with black paper rather than with the white that I normally use. It seemed the best way to have the snow show up clearly. I'm glad that this piece seems to speak to you. Your time and comments are very much appreciated. Best regards, Will

Boy! You really captured this winter scene with the snow, very nicely. the details as usual make it look so real and the rhythm of the trees and sunset really express a great deal in this piece, my friend!

Artist Reply: Mark: thanks so much for such kind comments! I enjoyed doing this and it's the first piece done on Dura-lar film that I backed with black paper. This allowed the snow to pop out. Thanks again and best regards, Will.

I love this and you are so right. This scenery does tell a story and I can see why you treasured it. Nice the way the the snow settles on the tree. Great work :)

Artist Reply: Skylar: Thank you so much for looking and for your very kind comments. I'm glad that this piece speaks to you and that it can perhaps brighten your winter! Have a great coming week. Best regards, Will

Very beautifully done. I really enjoy your landscapes. This drawing reminds me of a Japanese block print.

Artist Reply: Barry: Thanks once again for such nice comments. I do enjoy doing landscapes, but I also enjoy doing still life pieces. I don't work on paper. I use a matte surfaced polyester film sold under the trade name of Dura-lar. The matte surface is on both sides and allows color to be added to both sides. The surface is quite smooth and makes it nice for the photo realistic look that I try to acheive. More info than you probably wanted! Best regards, Will

This is really superb!

Artist Reply: Ruth: thanks so very much! What a generous comment. This is my first attempt to doing a winter scene. I'm also pleased with how it turned out. Thanks again and best regards, Will

Great looking art Will. Never tried colored pencil and it looks like you mastered it. Keep it up and keep riding. Thanks for your kind comment also.

Artist Reply: Stan: Thank you so much for such generous comments. We never truly feel that we have master our medium, but I feel that you certainly have. I looked at more of your work and find it all beautiful. The row boat at sunrise is particularily amazing. The color is wonderful. If you have time, would you please let me know where you have the gicle prints of you work done? I have thought about this, but have never followed up on it. I work on a matte surfaced polyester film called Dura-lar rather than on paper. I don't know how gicle prints of this would turn out. Sorry to be so wordy! Best regards and have a great weekend. Will

What a Truly Beautiful work of Art Will. I thought it was a photograph and I'm amazed that it is colored pencil. You are very talented Will. The scene is Beautiful to see and I like the story behind it. Excellent Artwork Will very Impressive!

Artist Reply: Joe: thank you so very much for such a nice comment. I dwell on detail and do strive for a photo realistic look. I'm very flattered that you initially took it to be a photograph. Colored pencil (Prismacolor Verithin pencils do wonders when applied to matte surfaced Dura-lar polyester film. Thanks again for taking time to view and comment on my work. Best regards, Will

Marvelous colored pencil Winter scenic artwork. :)

Darlene Foster 25 Jan 2015

very well done, snow is very difficult

Artist Reply: Darlene: thanks so much. This was hard, but it helped me to realize how effective a black backing to the Dura-lar polyester film that I use is to this type of subject. Thanks again. Best regards, Will

Love the contrast of the sky to the tree branches. Great work.

Artist Reply: James: thank you so much. I was drawn to using the original old slide that my father-in-law took years ago because of the way the snow showed up on the tree branches. Yes, the background sky helped to really bring this out in this piece. I was pleased how the whole thing looked. Best regards, Will

cindy kelly 12 Jan 2015

Absolutely beautiful Will. I love how you did the trees.

Artist Reply: Cindy: thanks so very much. I enjoy doing winter trees and was drawn to this because of the snow on the branches. As you know I use Dura-lar polyester film as a surface rather than paper. I always back the finished pieces with white paper to allow the colors to really pop. However, this did not allow the snow to show clearly, so I backed this piece with black Cranston board. The snow shows up nicely, but I feel that the overall look may be darker than I had intended. Guess I refer to the piece as "Early dawn in the snowy medow". Thanks again. Best regards, Will

JUST "BEAUTIFUL COLORED PENCIL WORK WILL... GORGEOUS SCENE.. JOANIE

Artist Reply: Joanie: thanks so very much. Your opinion means a lot to me. This is a beautiful scene and what drew me to it especially was how the snow sat on the tree limbs so nicely. However, to get this to show up clearly, I had to back the Dura-lar polyester film with black Cranston board. It turned out a bit darker than I really wanted, but it still turned out to accurately reflect the scene. Thanks again and all my best. Will
