Canna glauca

So, this is my finished! painting entry to the 2014 Botanicality contest on Tumblr. Go over and take a look if you could and vote! Maybe even for me if you like it more than the other entries. There are some beautiful things done for this event so I do recommend at least having a look. If you do like it and you have a Tumblr then please go like or even reblog it. All done in watercolours using references from a botanical textbook as the photos of this plant I took myself didn't have any of the flowers developed fully (wrong time of year). The messiness is a purposeful thing for the most part as an attempt to counteract my bad habit of rubbing paint while it's still drying - ditto the parti-coloured background which is a very light wash of every colour I used in the painting itself in different patches. I think the white highlights really finish the thing off - I was debating doing a black or coloured ink outline over all of it but decided against it in the end. Overall I am more than happy with the finished result and am going to carry on doing other ones like this (thanks for the inspiration then, Botanicality!) As always, comments, questions and/or critiques are always welcome. (As are commissions at the moment!)
