This painting is best seen with blurred vision (take your glasses off!) It is reminiscent of the impression you get in a forest when you open your eyes having been asleep for while. It radiates like a stained glass window. As a student I spent hours looking at Rembrandt paintings trying to understand how he showed light and dark and I think I am beginning to get it. It is painted with thick impasto paint on 3D canvas - edges painted to match.
