Sunrays

"Subtle bands of ‘sunrays’ beam down upon the ocean, illuminating the surface of the sea and spotlighting a breaking wave."

Artist comment: "On a cool winter morning, my husband and I took a trip to the Oregon Coast and watched the sun coming up. A fog bank formed and clouds rolled in. I was awed by the beauty of a moment when a translucent wave rose up just as the sun broke through and hit the top of the wave. I reached for my camera to photograph the phenomenum, but it didn’t occur again! So at home, I painted this oil from memory of the sunrays and highlights of that day. I sketched the composition and then chose the green and gray color scheme. The headlands on the left are balanced by the rising swell of dark water on the right. I designed the space so the eye travels from sky to cliffs and onto the spray, then across the wave to the foam patterns on the right and back to the left bottom of the painting. It is what I call a ‘z’ composition."
