A Midsummer Night's Dream

Might be my favourite painting I've ever done - "A Midsummer Night's Dream" - certainly one of my largest and most complex. Inspired of course by Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" - one of my favourite plays! Queen Titania is featured most prominently, her jealous king Oberon has convinced Puck (depicted here as a classical Cupid-like figure based a little bit off my nephew Fox) to use a love-potion made from magical violets to cause Titania to fall in love with actor Nick Bottom (who has just been magically given the head of a Donkey). Follow all that? All the other faeries are out in this Midsummer's Night forest scene - a procession leading into the twilight as the faeries turn into luminous moths. You can seven see a mermaid and a classical dolphin-fish as a nod to the whole Oberon/dolphin/mermaid reference. A lot of classical references hiding in this piece, actually! The magical glowing lights really do almost look like they're glowing, but no - this is a hand painted piece with no lighting effects, hehe, done the old fashioned way - an original acrylic painting on wood. My original acrylic painting. Prints available at http://www.zazzle.com/strangeling* and http://www.strangeling.com
