New England Seaport Sketch 1

This is the first of the layout process on 18" x 24" Arches 140 lb. water color paper which I drew using a 9H lead. I used Photoshop and laid out the center of interest in the darker shading, This gives me an idea of how the work will be weighted. In this case it is across the horizontal access of the painting, with the greatest volume shading beginning inside the left side point of the golden mean and diminishing to the right side point of the golden mean. The painting is built around the center of the paper and weighted slightly to the left.

This is a superb sketch,Stanton, and I like the composition already! -Wonderful drawing ability!

Artist Reply: Thanks Julie. This work reflects my classical training in music. You might take a look at Old Gloucester. This is a fantasy theme and variation of the compositional elements of that work. If Elgar, Rachmaninov, and Brahms et al. could do it, so can I!
