Cottonmouth snakes are venomous so it's fortunate this one was well out of striking distance and went the other way into the grass at Hagerman NWR.

Beautiful! Dad taught me to always walk slowly to give any poisonous snake a chance to warn a person with a buzzing sound. Venomous Snakes need to save as much of their venom as possible for catching rodents for their food.
