Swallow on the Wing

To say that swallows fly erratically is an obvious understatement. I used to often practice trying to photograph them on the wing in the hope that if I kept at it regularly, then following other, larger birds would eventually become much easier. In hundreds of tries I only managed to ever get two or three decent shots. Eventually I realized it was hopeless, and what I had captured were purely flukes. Until one afternoon I started to discover that if I left both my eyes open, and tried to combine what I was seeing in the camera with my open left eye, attempting to merge the two very different views, I could actually follow them briefly and improve my chances dramatically. Once I had figured that out, along with stubborness to try and challenge myself with a new idea in photography,I was able to get, over a couple of summers, dozens of shots of swallows on the wing. I'm pretty sure that tourists in the same park must have thought I was crazy as a loon darting around with my camera. This is my favorite.
