Bandon Afternoon

"It is a lovely early afternoon at the lighthouse at Bandon, Oregon on the Coquille River. You have spent the morning playing in the surf and exploring beach and rocks. Returning to the lighthouse, you are struck with awe at the peachy hues of the sky and the rainbow colors reflecting on the bright white of the building itself."

Artist Comments: "This is a pastel on hot-pressed 140# watercolor paper. I have done several paintings of the Bandon Lighthouse on the Coquille River, and each one is different in mood and color. I especially like the rainbow effect of the late afternoon sunshine on the starkly white building. Even the clouds were painted in a variety of colors to enhance the ambience. The composition is simple and direct, with the employment of a diagonal log in the foreground reaching into the dark corner. The eye is then led back upward to the horizon, to the window of the lighthouse, and onward to examine the structure of the tower and move to the sky. Opposing diagonals of the clouds bring you back to the roof, down the shadow side to once more rest on the log and grass. This is a very pleasant painting to be involved in."
