Karen Pike - In The Jazz.

This event, being held at the Oliva Family Cuban Cigar Factory in Ybor City, recaptures the feel of a Havana nightclub circa 1940's, and features live music and drinks, and the artwork of Karen Pike. Having recently arrived from Los Angeles, the artist has come to Florida to explore the vivid and colorful history of the Cuban / Floribbean culture, and to capture that magic on canvas.

Event Features:

Live Performance Painting by Karen Pike - Ms. Pike will be painting live at the show, inspired by the music and feel of the event.

Raffle tickets will be sold during the performance, and a winner drawn at the end of the night will take the piece home (a $2000 value).

The thumbnails and background struck me as being almost typical art school impressionism. In her Gallery setup, however, 'Sold' paintings were listed at the top, and I figured that viewing the paintings already deemed market worthy by their having been purchased, I would get a good sense for the best that this artist has to offer. After spending better than an hour browsing through page after page of her brilliant paintings, I realized two things: One, this artist is very, very prolific. Two, she has a remarkably keen eye for beauty in shape and form, with the talent and craftsmanship to share that vision with us.

I typically show a thumbnail here of one of the paintings in the gallery. I really felt I should show you this one in the largest image size so you could fully appreciate it. Entitled 'Elegant Expressions', the true beauty in this piece is in the detail, something not often said about impressionistic work. From the soft reflection of the chin to the strand of hair on her shoulders, pike has created a vision in graceful lines and form.

Although she has a wide selection of form studies like this one, her subject matter is far from singular (although she does show a predilection for wine, women and song). From bright hot scenes of jazz parties with French Quarter flavor, to cool dark moments of wonder, pike seems to draw in the whole world around her, and spits it back out through her brush, with every nuance of atmosphere and emotion clearly rendered in minimalist strokes. What's more, many of these paintings seem to vibrate with the sheer joy of life that the artist infuses into them.

Typically, I would recommend two or three of my favorite paintings for you to check out. However, this is not a typical gallery. Check out each of the categories, use the show all link to bring it all to one page if you have the bandwidth, and spend some time scrolling through them all. I also recommend the large view. I found after some review that Karen pike's art is anything but typical.

Jan. 16--You could feel the creative electricity coming through the walls Friday night during the Pacific Art Collective's "Cultural Xposure" event at the San Jose Museum of Art.

Lovers of cultural art forms -- painting, poetry, hip-hop and dance -- could find something to enjoy. Poets Jason Bayson and Anthony Miller were big hits. And a lot of people showed up to catch 49ers wide receiver Brandon Lloyd perform live hip-hop.
