Robert Reeves was born in Waterloo, Iowa in 1970. He received a BA from the University of Northern Iowa in 1994. He has been creating and exhibiting Art for over 15 years. Working primarily from photos taken while chronicling his time spent walking and traveling Reeves paints moments of personal significance and striking balance. His paintings allow the viewer to assume the role of voyeur giving them the opportunity to step into the scene and watch people moving through their everyday landscape. His painting style employs rough, energetic handling of the medium and highly saturated colors. Scenes that look photographic from a distance dissolve into masses of fervent brush strokes and splotches of paint. Building facades become washes. Figures become a slash of brush. Reeves admits that while the finished works appear to be plausibly genuine his process for arriving at the final composition is more organic: shifting figures and structures around to match the memory of the moment rather than remain fully within the constrains of merely reproducing a photograph. He seeks to move beyond the photograph and delve into his memory of the moment and convey it to the viewer. Robert currently works and lives in Des Moines, Iowa.
