Self Portrait

http://www.myspace.com/betty_luna_fairy_art http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/betty-luna.html I am a Self Taught Artist.I do not use a light box or any other tools( computer software), to draw.Just a pencil, a sharpener, and an eraser,(once in a while ) I have been drawing since I can remember. I remember my step father would draw on the steamed windows from boiling water to make me oatmeal, he would draw funny faces, and I would draw them too, I think I was 2 or 3, and he would also draw dagwood and blondie, on a napkin, and I would draw them too. My mom saved a book marker with Twiggy on it that I drew, I think I was in second grade then.(1964)In grade school I would draw for all my classmatesI remember my friends would have me draw Indian girls with braided hair and a feather. I would try and draw The Supremes from the Marvel Comics books we had too. When I was a teen I would draw girls with very long eyelashes, and I would give them to all my friends. Everyweek I would try to draw Cher in her outfits (1970).As an adult my favorite Artist is a friend of mine.He went to school in Chicago and Boris was actually his lecturer there. I used to go visit him at the Art Design Studio here in town, Nampa, Idaho. His name is Marcus Marshburn. He does the paintings for the Religious Books you see for Children in the Doctors offices. He signs his name Marcus. My first fairy (black Ink drawing) I sold for $5 in 1989 I made several copies and had them sitting on my vending table, where I was selling my dream catchers. I sold them all. I also had 2 other drawings on my table too, they went fast. . an Indian that looked like Willie Nelson(LOL)I will post the Indian on here too, his real name is Walking Stick, from the book Seven Arrows. and a Lion. I also have painted window murals for over 25 years.I do this free handed drawings with a china stick and then paint the pictures backwards, inside out. Right now I am trying to get as many pieces done for my portfolio as I can (and some I need to finish that I have in my portfolio for years)I'm also painting some of my drawings onto canvas. I love to draw the fairies and see what comes into my mind as I am drawing them. I hope to have several pieces done and posted on here soon. The pictures that I draw I get inspiration from sometime old ads and I can see the pose of the people and thier smiles, so, sometimes I will draw up a dozen or so, and then I take the rough drawing that I have with me to work, or stay up late at night and just draw away. I will change thier hair and alot of things and add things ,what ever is coming into mind I will look for different things to ad into them.I work for hours on the hair, and eyes. I have been drawing the eyes for ever, and to get them even wasn't the easiest task but I did master that way back in my teens. At least I had that skill and I would draw just eyes for hours. I started drawing from ads in my 20's. Sometimes jean's ad's or purfum, and wine. I would draw the portrait like and change the outfits that they would wear. This is how I did the Milkyway Girl. She was from a very very old cigar ad and I think from India. She had her head tilted back, only I did not want to put a cigar in her hand, so I decided to use the orb, but it seemed to need something more to it, and my son told me a star would be fitting, and then he went further to say that I needed to make her pants have stars, too, and also a tear in her pants so she would be a punk rocker..And so thats how we came about the stars being behind her, and I would do all this doodling at work on all her several stars in her little universe.(does anyone notice my mistake on her feet ?)The wings just kinda landed on her from the way I styled her hair her, it all seemed to flow the way it wanted to go, and I decided that ribbons were fit for this, and shaded them in to look shinney.( my other trademark, besides the long eye lashes are the flowing hair, since I was a teenager even )At first too, I had just her sitting there and she needed something else to sit on so I added the pillow.(the bell is a significant symbol from my childhood too, that I use once in a while, it symbolizes how poor we were at one point, and during christmas my uncle came to our house as santa, with the bells and everything. I really did believe in him , this is probabally the most influentual moment of my life, that inspired some magic and hope in me.) I had thought about having her just afloat, but just left the pillow. I figure that her being my own character that I could use this image and do another one similar to this, of her floating. Her name came about by the time I finished her ,which too maybe 30 hours or more off and on over several months, maybe even a year because I worked on other pieces too, anyways her name Milkyway comes from a song that was on the radio about the time I finished her that I like alot, The band Train sings It, and this is part of the Lyrics in it, She just stepped off of the Milkyway. anyways....All of my drawings are always different then what I start out on doing, also I should have some pieces ready for products on this site soon, my new online store > http://www.cafepress.com/whizperz http://www.cafepress.com/bettyluna
