Self Portrait

Hi! I am a writer by trade. I was an artist in the 1970s and 1980s but I gave it up to write starting in the late 1980s. In 2004 I became quite ill with cancer. I received a multiple organ transplant in 2005. Soon after the surgery I suffered a stroke which disabled me by paralyzing my entire right side. I have difficulty getting around but I have returned to the canvas after a 10 year absence. I was just starting up again, but I felt the need to paint. I am surrounded by friends who are also artists; painters, potters sculptors and graphic artists. Now that I can no longer work 9 to 5, I find I am returning to a bohemian lifestyle, necessarily opposed to not. I hope you enjoy my attempts and feel free to contact me for any reason. Paint, paint, paint !! ~Gary Parker (2007)

Gary Parker, Detroit Area Artist [email protected] Parker Art Studios - Div Point Production Co LLC 155 South Main Street #1101 Mount Clemens MI 48046-1101 United States

Mount Clemens, Michigan and Sarasota, Florida area Artist, Gary Parker started creating art at a very early age, scouring the suburban Detroit streets for found objects, usually small metal parts that had fallen off of automobiles and settled in the gutter. Parker and a friend would paint these objects, glue them onto a piece of cardboard or wood and pedal them door to door. Sales were sluggish at best.

Parker began to write and type on his parent’s many typewriters. Before he graduated from high school, Parker was known for writing notes in a small journal. He called it his “idea book.” In 1973, Parker was painting as well as writing for several local newspapers and submitting articles for a couple magazines.

He went on to writing and drawing for many Detroit area creative art houses, supplying text copy and line drawings. These creative art houses supplied publications and books for many local automotive, aerospace, robotic, military and educational industries.

Because he was very motivated and mechanically inclined, his employers were pleased that Parker could research and evaluate any industrial, mechanical, electrical equipment, convert highly technical processes to step by step text, graphs and drawings that could be understood by the average layperson as well as educational instructors.

Unfortunately, the fast pace and long hours took their toll on Parker, who had to leave that industry behind when he became deathly ill with Cancer, followed by numerous other health issues and a massive stroke which left him paralyzed and bedridden for over a year.

When Parker was lying in bed in the nursing home he says, “ I realized my life had taken a huge change, and I could accept my fate and die, or I could resolve to accept the change, live and try to return to a somewhat normal and happy life.” Parker continues,“ I count my blessings because I have a beautiful and loving wife who takes good care of me, and my children who are all grown and successful in their own life. If I have to live a slower paced lifestyle, it would still be a life worth living!”

Parker recovered, rehabilitated and although he is severely handicapped, he can now walk short distances aided by a cane. Parker claims he likes to paint to pass the time as he has done for many years. Parker says he naturally gravitates toward other artists and most of his friends are accomplished artists; some are actually making a living at it!

Parker says:

"I am open to anyone who wants to trade one of their Art T-Shirts for one of mine; just an honest, outright trade, a shirt for a shirt. The artists will pay for the shipping from their studio to the other artist. A barter, a deal, no cash exchanged for a hand painted, screened or airbrushed shirt! Send all inquires to me at my email or studio address, indicated on this site."
