Self Portrait

I have always been fascinated with art. I spent hours looking at other artists work such as such as Miro, Kandinsky and Picasso and Impressionist Renoir and Van Gogh. I wanted to be as good as them. I went on to study Fine Art at University and was awarded a BA Honours in Fine Art degree in 2002. Continuing to developmy understanding and knowledge of the art world I then attended the University of Greenwich in London gaining a Masters in Arts Management in 2005.

Having used many different mediums over the years I have been particularly pleased with the work I have produced using Acrylics and have realised I must practise using only Acrylics in order to Master the Medium. My painting style is bold and bright colours. I paint like this because I want to express the beauty in colour and express the subject matter from my eyes to its full potential. My paintings are created by how I feel about the subject and how I want to communicate my feelings about it. When I paint, I am enveloped into the artwork. Sometimes I do not know what I will paint when I start. I look at the canvas, wonder what the result will be, and am filled with excitement and unknowing. The images come with each layer of paint. Other times I have an idea, a concept that appears from something in everyday life or a feeling, or thought I get and I work with that in mind.

I chose my subject matter according to interesting lines and colours. Depending on how I feel about the subject. I then work out how to express it. If it is a city landscape I use geometric shapes and bold colours to represent the edges and stillness of a city landscape. If I am trying to communicate an atmosphere or a feeling then the work tends to lean towards the more abstract.

My lastest music related works are my emotional response to music. They are influenced by the excitement and atmosphere of live music; the lighting, the shapes of the instruments, the stance of the musicians, and the tempo of music. I try to combine and distil these elements in there extremities onto the canvas to capture the essence of music
