Biography

As a naturalist and wildlife enthusiast, Cedric Colond has always enjoyed spending time outdoors. An interest in art began as a child and has developed into a lifelong passion. Courses completed in 2003 include Biology 'Nature of Ontario', Philosophy, Sociology and Psychology. Cedric originally began creating fine art as gifts for family and friends, touring with art festivals. The 'New Canadians' exhibit in June 2007 at the Parkdale Gallery evoked a very strong response, leading to the invitation to be an exclusive artist with the gallery indefinitely.

A combination of permanent exhibitions have brought his unique artwork across Ontario. In July 2007, the Greystones Gift + Book Shop invited Cedric to display his work at their location in Bon Echo Provincial Park. A special exhibit was organized in August 2007 at all four Ottawa Hospitals, the donation of artwork sponsored by Dr. Ruth Padmore of the General Campus. The invitation was extended from the Ottawa Hospital Foundation / Facilities Management Team and the permanent exhibit will feature thirty paintings.

Artist Statement

"A love of nature and inner spirituality has been an ongoing inspiration for my artwork. Each painting captures the essence of the subject, balancing exquisite detail and a focus on light. Based upon realism yet drawing upon a luminscent dream-like quality, it is a truly original interpretation of the natural world. The wildlife studies have explored expressive animal gestures in their natural habitats. I am hoping to raise awareness of the beauty and fragility of the earth and build support towards ensuring its survival for future generations"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Technique

"My technique has been developed through experimentation and research into the collective experience of fine art masters throughout history. After composing a painting through sketches and notes, a layer of underpainting establishes darker areas. Although many artists continue to gradually move towards lighter tones, I move from darkest to lightest areas until they connect. Animals are created with a similar technique, the brightest texture reflections are painted with a semitranslucent matte medium. I also use a thin wash to create certain effects in the water and sky.

I enjoy working with acrylic paints, they are very malleable and suit my painting style. I use all sizes of brushes, starting with the large fan moving to medium fan/round, then micro sized for the finest precision. Three special paintings have been created for the 'Modern Still Life' exhibit at the Parkdale Gallery from August 1st - September 12th. A fusion of still life styling and Canadian wildlife including herons, waxwings and indigo buntings.

Cedric's technique and style has continued to evolve as he studies under the direction of James Robinson at the Parkdale Gallery. The artist's home studio will be open for viewings October 15th. Please feel free to contact Cedric for more information about prices, artwork availability and commissioned projects.

Biography

A self-taught artist born in the prairies of Regina, Cedric grew up in Ottawa where he spent much of his youth outdoors enjoying sports and camping. A love of art began at an early age, starting with drawing and sketches then watercolors as the years continued. Growing up, Cedric spent much of his free time practicing and learning, studying independently and attending workshops. In 2000, Cedric traveled to Singapore and eastern Canada visiting family while taking in local culture. His creativity took a new direction as he experimented with computer animation, graphic design and graffiti art. Cedric declined a career in computer work because the constraints of corporate media greatly limit personal creativity. Following high school graduation, Cedric completed courses at Carleton University studying Biology (Nature of Ontario), Psychology, Sociology and Philosophy receiving Dean's List commendation.

Reflecting upon his travels, Cedric realized how perfectly seascapes capture beautiful reflections of light. Cedric has since developed his acrylic painting skills, which have become the culmination of his lifelong love of nature and art. Great influence is drawn from the work of Tony Forest, such as diverse perspectives and meticulous attention to detail. The striking paintings by Salvador Dali have also influenced his work, where surreal and utopian qualities glimmer throughout each piece. Alternately, a special emphasis on light and movement from the work of Monet has been fused into his unique style. Cedric's experience with varied media contributed greatly to the development of his technique and style. A broad variety of perspectives captures the wonderful visual effects created from light, clouds and reflective surfaces. The pond study, framed in forest settings, concentrates upon the tranquility of nature and its inhabitants. The most recent collection on African wildlife brought an extreme complexity to Cedric's work, and a more exotic backdrop to each piece. Each painting is an emotional explosion of light and color calmed by sharp details leading the viewer to experience his dreamlike vision. Cedric's artwork captures the essense of nature's elements beyond the surface, drawing upon the infinite continuity of life.

Artist Statement

I have developed a deeper understanding of myself from the time I have spent studying and travelling. Whether listening to the splashing of waves or observing a family of geese, nature and humanity are connected in a primal spiritual unity. In a fast paced world, it is easy for people to lose their connection with nature. My international travels and love of Canada led me to choose the content of my works. I have captured scenes that display special emphasis upon the interaction of light and water. Beautiful patterns of colour and light can be found in both nature and wildlife. Starting with a set of ten seascapes and sunrises, each experiments with a unique balance between the warmth of the sky and glimmering waters. Early works feature different scenes from tropical locations, framed with deep ultramarine blues or greenish water. One special piece, 'Bahamas from above', captures an aerial overview of the islands and surrounding coasts. A side study on tropical palms began with 'Cool Palms' and finished with 'Boats at Sunrise', slowly shifting into a warmer overall tone.

Drawing from my studies in biology, I have analyzed the animal subjects individually by profile, anatomy and behaviour. Consequently, a special focus began on the diffussion of light through semi-transparent surfaces spreading from the animals into their surroundings. The waterfowl study zooms into a close perspective, with cooler tones and a focus on the reflection of light in calm water. A common resident in Cedric's hometown of Ottawa, the Loon and Canada goose study includes elaborate patterns of vegetation accenting crisp and still waters. The following three works include majestic big cats in their native environment. A broad range of gestures and emotions are explored during the feline study, ranging from the proud yet powerful 'White Bengal Tiger' waking at dawn to the original 'Bengal Tiger', a more aggressive and primitive painting. From an appreciation for the beauty in the world around us people may unite with the raw elements of life. Chaos and order, the cycle of life continues one second at a time, destruction then restoration for all of time. As warm light sweeps across the horizon, time may begin to slow, and one may marvel in the simplicity of existence.
