Jeremy Gluck has been involved in the arts all his life, as a writer - journalist, novelist, poet, lyricist and more - singer with cult band The Barracudas and as a solo artist, performer, actor and now laterally painter, which pursuit he planned for many years as an escape from word-bound expression. Beginning with three darker pieces dedicated to his family - The Lost, Mary, and Noel - and progressing to more colourful works such as the abstract Reading Saint, a faceless portrait, Sarita, and a chaotic tribute to a rock'n'roll legend, Jerry Lee, Jeremy is now creating work on request and exploring more legendary subjects.
Often employing cutup and other experiemental techniques in his writing, Jeremy replicates this tack in his painting, working quickly and largely intuitively, the paintings taking form from a vague seed idea nurtured by lateral thinking and randomness. Mixed media using grubby images and techniques such as burning and scraping, the application of shoe polish and spray paint and other contrasting media, and a love of the palette knife, makes the work crude and idiosyncratic. Weathering of work, heating - even burning - ripping of canvas and other nervy approaches have now led back to more simple expression in oils, acrylics and collage.
