I tore my right rotator cuff this year. With one tendon completely torn off and another ripped in half, I haven't been able to use my camera due to the pain.

Now that surgery has repaired the tendons, I am still rehabbing the shoulder. Unfortunately, I don't have enough strength or stamina in the shoulder to spend much time hefting the camera, although I get stronger every day.

And with minus 50 and 60 degree weather lately, I haven't had the urge or desire to get outside in that kind of butt-numbing cold. I figure by the time the Ice Festival starts in March I should be raring and ready to go.

I work for a small commuter airline that is heavily involved in tourism in the Interior of Alaska. Recently, we have branched out a bit and are doing polar bear expeditions to Kaktovik, Alaska on Barter Island. By Alaskan standards it is just a short jaunt southeast of Barrow. I have been spending a good bit of my time in Kaktovik which is a small village of 250-300 people that sits in ANWR on the Arctic coast.

So for now all I have are polar bear photographs .... bummer. :)

Our short days now start to stretch into long, Winter nights, snuggling in close as the snow falls and life slows down. It's that time of year when the garden has been harvested and we settle next to the wood stove warming our feet against it.

Winter has come to the Interior. Snow silences the every day street noises as a blanket of white covers everything.

Our school dsctriit almost never closes for snow either. When everyone else closes the night before ours usually either carries on or calls the morning of and delays two hours. It was really the ice that closed it today, but a kid will take anything they can get. -

The Midnight Sun has returned to the Interior of Alaska. It gets harder to sleep as daylight calls out for our attention. Sleep deprivation will set in as we race to fill the hours with everything that must be done before the snow returns.

We have almost 12 hours of daylight now. As we creep into Spring and Summer, I am dreaming of the garden and feeling warm dirt on my hands.
