I'm just a crazy lady who loves to draw and paint. I always have! When I was a little girl, my mother took me to art classes, and when I got older, I got into doing macrame' (remember the macrame' owls? Ha!) After that I got into painting ceramics. I eventually got discouraged because I seemed to be unable to create my favorite type of art, which is realism. I am most impressed with artists who have the talent to just take a simple pencil and sheet of paper, and bring a portrait to life, complete with depth, expression, and minute details. For years I didn't draw or paint, but instead followed a completely different path which eventually landed me in the field of chemistry. I've been a chemist for 14 years now, and I do enjoy my job a great deal. However the need to be creative resurfaced after I started dating an artist who excels at creating beautiful realism. I thought he could teach me, but after about two minutes of him explaining anatomic proportions and muscle tone, I had a migraine. I just wanted him to shut up! Ha! He didn't see what was so hard about it. If he ever tries to discuss it with me again, I am going to get out one of my old calculus books and read it to him! He then encouraged me to just "do what I can" just for the fun of it. That's what I did, and he complimented my work and said it was cute and fun and that he thought some people would love it. With each painting I feel confident enough to try something new or go to a higher level of detail. Now when I ask Michael for advice when I'm working on a painting, he gives me a very SHORT and simple answer so that he doesn't blow my mind.
I don't have any huge artistic accomplishments to boast about. I've never been in a gallery or been paid for any of my artwork. I do have some small accomplishments, so I will go ahead and list them here for purposes of being humorous:
1. I won the annual "rodeo" drawing contest in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. In the 4th grade, I procrastinated and did not have time to color my picture. That year I not only won out of my grade, but out of the whole school. The prize was a set of tickets to the local rodeo, and my poor mother got so sick of having to take me to the rodeo every year. Ha!
2. In high school I was selected to make a sign for the homecoming football game. The cheerleaders held it by each end and the football players ran through it and tore it all up!
3. At work, I was asked to make signs with cute pictures on them to advertise for the blood drive.
4. A couple of years ago, I was asked to do face painting at my daughter's school carnival. I did a painting of a black and white puppy one one little girls' face, and a picture of that ended up being put in the local newspaper. So I can claim that my work has sort of been published! LOL
5. Last November the "hedgehog pumpkin" that I helped my daughter make for a school project won the "best overall entry".
Well, that's it for now. Hopefully I can add to my list of accomplishments soon, like that somebody actually wanted to buy one of my paintings!
If you've read this far then I commend you for your patience and wish you a wonderful day!
