Self Portrait

For Langhorne, Pennsylvania artist Allan Hill, the essence of his art occurs in the process. Relying upon chaos and chance to provide many options, experimentation is encouraged. He keeps the situation flexible, makes adjustments in response to the developing work, and allows the piece to pull together by its own energy, without rules or limits. "It's a matter of the painting having more questions than answers, and to persuade the viewer to new possibilities of thought".

Born in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, he has exhibited his lyrical collage paintings in national juried competitions, including the Denise Bibro Gallery, NY; Touchstone Gallery, Washington D.C.; National Watercolor Society; Philadelphia Water Color Society; Collage Artists of America; International Society of Experimental Artists; Northwest Watercolor Society, and the Western Colorado Watercolor Society.

Mr. Hill's works have also been exhibited in several galleries, including The Springfield Art Museum, Springfield MO; Toro Gallery, Huntingdon Valley PA; Brodsky Gallery of the Educational Testing Service, Princeton NJ; William Ris Galleries, Stone Harbor NJ; The Ambre Studio, Bethlehem PA, and The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

A series of jazz themed paintings have been recently published as posters by Editions Limited, Emeryville CA, for worldwide distribution. Work has also been included in several books by Rockport Publishers, and recently, has a jazz piece included in Blaze Hill Press's "Eyes on: Abstracts". In addition, his work is in private and corporate collections including, President William J. Clinton; Springfield Art Museum, SmithKline Beecham; U.S. Healthcare; Morgan Stanley; Summerland Hospital, Las Vegas NV; Wyeth Ayerst, and Astra Zeneca.

He is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art (University of the Arts), class of 1959, majored in Illustration, and studied under Henry C. Pitz, Albert Gold, Jacob Landau, Larry Day, Paul Keene and Jane Piper.

After graduation, he served with the 5th U.S. Army Intelligence as an Illustrator at Ft. Sheridan, Illinois. Post-military, he worked in graphic design--and as one of the founding partners in the former Mandala, Inc., a Philadelphia graphic design studio specializing in corporate communications--Mr. Hill served as a Designer and Art Director from 1971 to 1989.
