Wingless Landing

Check out the finch on the right. I was really surprised to see that he had already folded his wings and was letting his momentum carry him to the feeder - I didn't realize they did that! Now, notice the finch at the bottom of the feeder to the left - see that purple around the legs? I would love it if someone could tell me what causes that and how to correct it. I'm still getting to know my new DSLR - it's my first one. Anyway, I've had that purple edge show up a couple of times around white subjects (an egret) with a darker background or as in this photo around the subject with a white/light background.
