MAD JACK'S COCKATOO

MAD JACK'S CITRON CRESTED COCKATOO poem by SLIM ASHBY, AN AUSSIE. paintography and photography by MICHAEL (MIGUEL) FORBUS MAD JACK'S COCKATOO Now Jack was a bloke who could drink "Holy Smoke!" He could swig twenty mugs to my ten, And that old cockatoo it could sink quite a few and it drank with the rest of the men One day when the heat was just plain was hard to beat, Mad Jack and his old cockatoo, Came in from the west to the "Old Swag Man's Rest" And they ordered up schooners for two, When these had gone down he popped out half a crown and they drank till their money was spent, Then he pulled out a note from his old tattered coat And between them they drank every cent, Then that old cockatoo it swore red, black and blue, And it knocked all the mugs off the bar, Then it flew through the air and it pulled at the hair, Of a chap who was drinking "Three Star", And it jerked out the pegs from the barrels and kegs Knocked the bottles all down from the shelf, With a sound like a cheer it dived into the beer and it finished up drowning itself When poor Jack awoke not a word then was spoke, But he cried like a lost husband's wife, And with each falling tear made a flood so severe, That the men had to swim for their life, Now poor jack was drowned and when finally found he was lying there stiffened and blue, It was told far and wide that stretched out by his side Was his pack mate ..... the old cockatoo.

Dare I say the poem was rattled of in Parrot fashion Michael. When it comes to fashion this image certainly has shed loads of that. Excellent contrasts with a pearl essence in the feathers & what to me looks like a loving pose. In a word superb Michael.

Artist Reply: Robin, I so appreciate your lyrical turn of a phrase. Your vernacular always seems to turn up the volume on the work I do a notch or two in your eyes and it is greatly appreciated. You, as a kind man and fellow artist, are also appreciated deeply. My most sincere gratitude to you for the gift of your brotherhood and your observations of my work. Have a most lovely weekend and thanks from the heart. Michael

These two are are *SO adorable and Mischievious* lookin'! In Love, Happy and up to lots of fun I say! Yup-that how I sees 'em! Funny and perfect "sailor type" story. Them birdies are SO cute! Love 'em and love the story, Michael. Cheers, mate! ~*~ AO

Artist Reply: Thanks so much Anon......Appreciate the kind words. I love this pair of birds and the poem although not my usual tale of the heart was actually that. It was clearly devotional love the bird in the tale and Mad Jack were devoted to each other, however gruff and wild the other was. Totally unconditional. Love that underlying current in the tale. Thanks so much for your kindness and generosity of statement. Michael

Exceptionally beautiful, Michael....you are a true artist.

Artist Reply: Lauren, you are so kind and generous. Like you I am just doing what I love. I heard this saying once that if you love what you are doing you will never work a day in your life and it seems I just have followed that saying. I love your work and your natural organic photographs and lifestyle. It is great to do what you feel is right and you look like you are doing just that. My most deep gratitude to you and have a really joyous weekend. Michael

Sniff, sniff - me own mum used to tell me ol' Jack poem most nights before I tuckered in... sniff - nice pic Miguel - sniff, poor ol' Jack anhis bird - sniff T-T

Artist Reply: Chas, I knew this would move the Aussie brothers and as I sit and quaff an oil can of Foster's, I cry for the feathered rodent myself a bit. But the went out like meteors the bird leaving a trail of debris like a hurricane. A lovely and devotional tale to pass to your children as my father used to read me Jack London poetry by heart drunk as a lord. A charmed childhood. Must be he same about the globe back in the day. Thanks for tears and the kind comments. The funerals were delightful, pyramids of empty oil cans, incomprehensible Queen's English and all just tarted to the T. The bird had his own box.....You are the king of comments, my dear genius friend. My best to you, Michael

Interesting, and attractive artwork, Michael!

Artist Reply: Carliss, is interesting good to you or does the poem seem out of my realm of interest. I love old recitations of Alaskan gold rush poetry and historical recitation of literature depicting the real history. I love these birds. They are in love and happy. Thank you for your kind comments, Carliss and getting to know more about you is great. Michael

Cindy Lemoi 09 Nov 2007

This is perfect. I love the effects and the capture of this tender moment. Wonderful !!!

Artist Reply: Cindy, aren't you the romantic. I thought the same thing when I took the shot. They were so close you couldn't get paper between them. The looks they gave each other were one's I would love to get some day. Thanks for your kind and sweet comments. Your observations are very much appreciated. Michael

Michael, wonderful paintings, and the poetry is great i enjoyed it very much, thank you for sharing, JOe.

Artist Reply: Joe, my good friend, sometime the writings seem to just go with the work. And in this case it wasn't romance that moved me but devotional friendship. Something that is very precious in our lives. My utmost appreciation for all your kindness and compliments. They are so very appreciated. Michael

what a sad tale indeed. the drink be cause of many a sad tale. beautiful painting Michael

Artist Reply: Jo, since I don't drink, I thought the poem a little like Jack London and liked the Australian feeling of it and since I always put the moralistic or romantic narratives to post, I though this would be a sort of fun but not a great ending to being a drunk. Thanks so much for the support and observation. Great image of your daughter. Loved it. Have a most joyful weekend. Michael

Joke Schotting 09 Nov 2007
