JAPANESE KABUKI THEATRE MASK

JAPANESE KABUKI THEATER MASK paintography and photography by MICHAEL (MIGUEL) FORBUS poem by unknown Japanese actor....quote by Miguel.... WE WEAR MASKS NOT TO REVEAL OUR REAL NATURE, IT SEEMS THAT OUR SINCERE REAL NATURE IS ENOUGH. MIGUEL KABUKI POEM Our love is troubled, As the moon by clouds, Or flowers by winds that blow. To win my way of love is hard As passing mountain pathways for mounted horsemen. In some distant village, Beyond the mountains, Far from the world of prying folk, In secret I would love. As rhythm to all music, So is my love: At eve I play the entertaining flute, At midnight sing; Upon the flageolet at dawn I voice my love. Whene'er I waking leave thy side, I long again for thee; And when I see the blossoms droop Beneath the rains of spring, I would not have you fade like them-- A maid unwed.

You have created an extraordinary being with your unerring use of vibrant color, shading and line. The visual power of the mask illuminates your real nature that cannot be hidden with the force of your passionate soul. You only have only to look into the eyes and read your beautiful poetry reflecting your profound character and genuine love, that rare elusive emotion that cannot fade when your sincere nature and devotion to all you love is expressed in the elegant beauty you create. I am grateful to be a part of your continually evolving life, creativity and infinitely generous heart.

Artist Reply: Julie, You are so very kind and giving to me with your most deep and thoughts with such clarity and wisdom. I was working on a bit of research for myself that combined the 3 act screen play and it's introduction of character and fleshing out of the character and in the second act the friction and implied danger and antagonistic action oriented writing, and the the final act or resolution of the second act. I compared it to Haiku which has the first line unrelated mostly to the second line and the third line marries the first two together and then the masks and covert agenda of the actors and the masks also mask the gender, and I then compared all of that to the lives we lead and the acting we do through our lives. And the pity of how many years I did not reveal the real me. Now upon feeling good about doing that, acceptance or not, I feel as if much time was wasted learning to act and not learning to be. As you can tell a late not of not to light thinking. But the mask was the manifestation of the thought process and would love to hear you feelings on those thoughts. You are such a lovely and giving woman, you must accept the compliment that you have changed many lives for the better and especially mine. I think deeply and my own thoughts. Bless you for that. Michael

Lynn De Serres 06 Nov 2007

Linda Bertiaux 05 Nov 2007

I love the mask. The poem is wonderful!! You are very talented, my friend.

Artist Reply: Linda, you are so very kind and generous and having peeked on your portfolio, And you have more going for you then the talent. Suffice it to say. I have lived all over Northern California, Berkeley, Marin, Humboldt and all over Northern Calfornia, so I know what you mean. But the water is to cold for the water sports I like and I like living on my boat in Florida and now it is the mountains in the south. But back to Florida on the Gulf coast in a few weeks. I am done working for a living and don't have to do anything so I just paint and write and play. Anyway that is the brief story of me. Thanks for the kind words about my work and writing. It is really generous of you. Michael

simply stunning!!!!. what more can i say!!!

Artist Reply: Monique, I thought of you when I did this since it is slightly off the grid and might I say you like to play in that field too. I am doing a study on the relationship between Geisha, Haiku and Kabuki since they are so familiar and the haiku has a sort of literary enigma or mask between the reader and the kernel or truth that lies within. All about seeing the sameness in everything. My deepest gratitude for your kind encouragement and observations. Michael

Jeanie Chadwick 04 Nov 2007

this is so bright and beautiful. So feline and sublime with the red accents and those eyes!

Artist Reply: Jeanie, in your travels and desire to know all about the world as I have that affliction and suppose all others do, you must know the concepts that create a Kabuki production. It is somewhat of a haiku done in a three act play in the minimalist style but also in the typical three act script that has introduction and fleshing of characters and study, then the addition of friction and implied danger, then to end, resolution. As Haiku, it would be the marriage of two separate subject images that are married in essence by the third and always counted syllable and letters in some. So I was writing a brief piece on the study of Kabuki and it came to me the image as the feline part was a great part of it and the stealth with which they must live. My gratitude kind friend, Jeanie, the one of living the dream. My best regards and bless you and all those that you love. Have a most glorious day. Michael

jamie winter 04 Nov 2007

excllent Michael just amazing. has a cat like quality to it!!!!!!

Artist Reply: Jamie, when I was painting this I was at the same time sort of writing the Kabuki play in my head and it was cat like in it's nature. I guess the hand did what the brain was thinking. Michael

William Boyer 04 Nov 2007

cool

Artist Reply: My friend William, as a fellow artist, you know what it is liked to be almost obsessively influence by something. My two are Hispanic culture and Oriental culture. Thus the mask and the Blue Agave. I sure appreciate the time it takes to keep up with all this writing back and forth. I do enjoy telling other people what I really like about their work and yours has a lot to speak about. Your talent and work is excellent and it gives me pleasure so let you know that plus I rarely sleep through the night and have loads of time on my hands. Thanks so much William. I really appreciate your comments on all. Michael

Minnie Shuler 03 Nov 2007

Very interesting, Michael. Why a cat? Is the mask to hide identity? Is this a proposal? Beautiful art.

Artist Reply: Minnie, I think it might be, but what am I proposing.....That you be a cat as well or act like one or paint your face and be without identity or shielding who you are within......or the ultimate proposal? That we both be anonymous? Which do you choose or do you have some others? Elusive Miguel thanks you so for your kind and genteel comments.

merle cruser 03 Nov 2007

Wonderful art!! looks like that woman in NY who has had many face changes to look like a cat!!

Artist Reply: Merle, I have seen that and also a man who is tattooed and has pins stuck in his face for whiskers. Also his lip cut. Wild. This comes off with stage cream. Thanks for the observation. Michael

Robin Brown 03 Nov 2007

Fine words Michael matched with visual beauty & colours to feed a starving soul. Your work shines Michael as you do. Glow man glow.

Artist Reply: Robin, you are so very kind. My gratitude to you good friend. My problem is the Gods put my heart on the outside, there is no hiding how I feel. I am transparent. My thanks and wishing the best weekend for you to enjoy. Your happiness is returning, I can feel it. Michael

Nira Dabush 03 Nov 2007

TOTALLY Gorgeous work,Michael..Somehow this portrait reminds me of a kitty, I seem to know :-)..truly FANTASTIC..One of your best...goes so wonderfully with the text.

Artist Reply: Nira, thank you so very much. I think I had the catlike moves of a geisha in mind when I did it. Something feline in the mind. My gratitude to you sweet woman. Michael

Alexandra Dvinitninova 03 Nov 2007

Another of your self portraits? :)

Artist Reply: Alexandra, in this case you must know that in the early Kibuki theater productions the women were played by men. But that alas is not my strong suit. I am much to shy to act although I have under duress. Thanks for the grin at the end. I hope you are having a lovely day and your heart is overflowing with joy. Michael

Gabrielle Stahlie 03 Nov 2007

Lior Goldenberg 03 Nov 2007

This one is excellent!!! Fantastic job, love it!

Artist Reply: Lior, this one is almost abstract in it's coloring. I am attempting to loosen up my style a bit. Still a tad stodgy in my approach. Thanks so much and am really drawn to your work and how you think when you are working or do you. Perhaps you are blessed with the doing and not analyzing as I do. Too much analysis (of me, I mean). Thanks so much for your kind comments. Michael

Jan van Baarle 03 Nov 2007
