I am a bit curious... does the little circle symbolize a pilgrim seeking God or etc.; how does it fit with its subject? What is the story behind this picture?

Your view reminds me of the line the Undiscovered Country which I think comes from Shakespeare. That peaceful place we want to get to but fear going to because the status qou is safer. The blues and gold, and earth tones set off the new being born from the old.
