your Border Collies are wonderful! They are my favorite dog...so smart! I have a Border Collie in my portfolio, but not near as good as yours! I wanted to ask you, how do you keep your work from smearing when you work in pencil/graphite? Karen :-)

Artist Reply: Thank you so much Karen. Border Collies are wonderful aren't they? The trick to keep pencil/graphite work from smearing is to keep a clean sheet of paper under your drawing hand. In addition, it's a good idea to always wash your hands before working to minimize the oils in your skin. Since I'm right handed I always work from left to right as well after I get the eyes done - I always do eyes first whether it's a human or animal because the eyes really hold the soul of the piece.

Awesom painting, Jeanne! I love Shelties and Border Collies. They are simply the best dogs.

Artist Reply: Thanks Fran :-) They are the best dogs, aren't they? Of course, my opinion might be a little biased :-)

Is this an Australian Shepherd? What beautiful drawings you do. My daughter has an Australian Shepherd, she lives in the States, I haven't seen one out here in Aus though!! Gorgeous!

Artist Reply: Nope, it's not an Aussie :-) Tess is a dark red & white Border Collie. You just can't see her tail due to the angle.

You really capture the spirit of these dogs. All of your dog pictures are fantastic! I love the eye contact between the dog and the sheep.

Artist Reply: Thank you Lisa. Border Collies are famous for their "eye" when it comes to working stock and its good to know that showed through in this piece.

Anna Sylvester 17 Apr 2007

Especially nice. You captured the hearding pose perfectly. I like the stubborn chin on the sheep too--as if she is considering not moving her woolly self--it looks all-too-familiar!

Artist Reply: Thanks Anna. I have six Border Collies and I currently herd and trial with two of them. I love watching them work. Don't you just love it when one of the ewes gets stubborn?
