John Wayne

Pastel on velour 9.5" x 12".I originally was going to do a desert background with cactus behind him,but I kind of like him plain like this...what do you think? Background or no? This is John Wayne, and I have never been a huge fan or seen many movies of his,but his face has alot of character he is fun to draw... a rather sizeable legend.

Chris, you did a great job on John! Velour can be fun to work on, gives nice soft edges! I have been commissioned to paint John twice.... that is enough for me.

Mike Beckett 29 Jun 2006

The paper has a little bit of texture so that makes it nice as a plain background. It's just a shame that the paper's so small, because I bet it would've looked great in an oval wooden frame... maybe I just think all cowboy pictures should be framed tat way. It looks great though. The likeness is right on, but more than that, I like the drama of the shadows and shapes and wrinkles.

Chris I just had to come and have another look at the Duke. Wasn't he a gorgous man. I just wish that he came to the UK a bit more. You have done a wonderful job with those pastels, I envy your talent at getting those skin tones. Just wonderful..... Opps sorry I'm gushing, please excuse me :)

Kathryn Arruda 03 Jun 2006

Great portrait! I think it's very effective just as it is- he was such a rugged personality w/ lots of character as you noted & really doesn't need background details- might be distracting. This monochromatic portrait is perfect as is.
