My first interest in Wyatt Earp came when I watched two movies while I was a youngster. One was entitled, "Gunfight at the OK Corral" from 1957 starring Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas. Another one that came out while in junior high school in 1967 was the "Hour of the Gun" starring James Garner and Jason Robards. Neither were particularly accurate movies depicting the life of Wyatt Earp or the gunfight at the OK Corral. Then in 1972 while in high school, the documentary , Appointment With Destiny: Showdown At OK Corral (link below to the documentary on YouTube) was first broadcast. It was the most accurate portrayal I had ever seen of the gunfight. I believe that the producers, writers and directors for the movies, "Tombstone" and "Wyatt Earp" which came out a little over 20 years after the documentary used this documentary as inspiration. Watch the documentary. You won't be disappointed. You can even see Bonanza actor, Lorne Greene as narrator of the show. Two books that I recommend in gleaning more information about Wyatt Earp & his family are, "The Earp Clan: The Southern California Years" written by my high school Nicholas Cataldo. I sketched the cover for the book. The book accurately describes the influence of the whole Earp family. Nicholas Cataldo contact is here: Nick Cataldo at [email protected] and read more of his local history articles at Facebook.com/BackRoadsPress. The book can be found on Amazon. The next book concerns Earp in another state - Idaho. Wyatt was always on the hunt for gold and silver and of course fortune. He ended up in northern Idaho after the famous gunfight and even managed to become deputy sheriff of Kootenai County, ID. The book that describes his exploits is entitled, "Wyatt Earp and Coeur D'Alene Gold: Stampede to Idaho Territory" written by Jerry Dolph and Arthur Randall. This area of Idaho is rich in history and some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. Check out the documentary below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuAh3delv2k
