"Mikey the River Cat", though she's crossed the Rainbow Bridge, was an adopted Tigger-Tortie who lived with me nineteen years before her passing in the kitchen chair beside me one late afternoon. I've heard other Tortoiseshell parents say Torties have a reputation for being extremely territorial, and so it was with Mikey. Our two wooded rainforest acres were her domain to guard and hunt and tour-guide me down to the riverbank with vocal urging. There she'd jump out onto the midstream boulders one-by-one with amazing leaps and encourage me to follow her. I'm no Olympian long-jumper, so I guess she despaired of me ever getting out to the furthest, though I got cold (and wet) feet plenty of times. Our games of "Marco Polo" had family and visitors alike in stitches.

I've loved many cats in my life, but doubt I'll ever find one with quite Mikey's personality and courage.
