Tackling Problematic MILs

If you get along great with your mother-in-law, then it’s great. There are lots of women who love their mother-in -laws because she is kind, caring, and down-to-earth. Unfortunately there are many of us with controlling mothers-in-laws too.

A mother with healthy behavior will elegantly step aside and encourage her son to make his wife his first priority. Some mothers however make the move difficult by manipulating him with guilt whenever he tried to make his wife his first priority. Possessive mother will always consider every woman incapable of looking after her son’s needs and even if she agreed to the marriage, she might have done so halfheartedly.

Studies have shown that a widow mother’s love towards her only son is extremely unusual. The widow mother will project all her love towards her dead husband onto her only son, who becomes her only prop of life and spirit, and the widow mother has a very strong desire to control her son. Thus this maternal love is usually abnormal.

In some cases, your husband’s parents might not be actually responsible for the rift; it might be your husband’s loyalty to them that might be the actual reason for all the problems.

Keeping your calm is not easy when you feel disrespected by the very people your spouse hold highest regard. Of course, tolerance has its limit. As much as possible do not keep those toxic emotions bottled up. If you do, you will end-up taking it out on your spouse and his loved ones once you reach boiling point.

If his mother wants to fume and blame you, let her stew in her own anger and stress, while you let it go and be happy with your hubby and your life. After all, life is moving so fast and we are missing out on each others life so much and then we are going to wonder if all this bitterness was worth it. You only get one chance in life.

A dozen tips to look fresh, beautiful and healthy

According to ayurveda healthy skin is the result of overall health condition of individuals.
Ayurveda philosophy is based on the fact that “if you cannot eat it, do not put it on your skin. What is put on the skin should be filled with nourishment, naturally occurring vitamins and minerals safe enough to be taken internally." Ayurveda says that skin eats whatever you feed it and feed yourself. Therefore, if you are concerned about your skin’s health and wellbeing, it is important to know the ingredients of what you apply externally.

Skin consumes food and other external applications like creams, lotion, etc. These external applications are believed to be absorbed directly into our body and they either contribute towards tissue building or become toxins. Hence you have to be careful in using cleansing products and other skincare applications. These products should not strip away skin’s natural oil and water, dry the kin and alter its pH balance.

Ayurveda mentions many simple natural ways to maintain a healthy and glowing skin.
Cleanse, nourish and moisturize your skin regularly. Proper cleaning involves getting rid of the dead cells and toxins, removal of make – up dirt, grime, clogged pores and elimination of harmful bacteria. Use natural products to clean and exfoliate the skin. Herbs and natural oils gently clear the dirt and other toxins keeping intact the moisture of the skin.

Avoid excessive exposure to sun, wind, cold, chemicals and pollutants. Do not use heavy night creams as they clog pores. Do not use very hot or very cold water for washing. Do not wear make-up to sleep.

Wash your skin daily. Pamper your skin regularly with a natural home spa treatment including a generous massage, application of mask, and an oil or milk bath. Regular caring of your skin will help you look fresh, beautiful and healthy.

• Cleanse your face with your usual cleansing milk or with a good soap (high TFM) and warm water.
• Massage your face either with milk cream or cucumber slices or tomato pulp. Always massage from chin to temples, from forehead to temples, under the eyes from inside corners outwards.
• Steam your face for two to three minutes to open the pores.
• Make your own scrub by mixing oats with milk to a paste-like consistency and rub over the face for 5-10 minutes. Those with oily skin can substitute water to milk. To make the scrub more intensive to get rid of black heads and pigmentation, add a teaspoon of sugar granules to the scrub paste.
• Apply a face pack. You can make a face pack by mixing a tablespoon of gram flour with a teaspoon of honey, fresh ground turmeric and milk (for dry skin). For oily skin, instead of milk, use rose water. Leave the pack to dry and then rinse.

• Apply freshly pureed tomato on your arms and legs for 10 minutes to decrease your tan.
• Massage your hands and feet with olive oil, rubbing into nails and cuticles to decrease brittleness.
• Use few drops of chrysanthemum oil or lemon grass oil in your bath water. These aromatherapy oils are excellent stress busters.
• Add ½ cup baking soda, 1 cup milk, ½ cup Epsom salt and peppermint oil to lukewarm bath. It feels great and leaves you feeling squeaky clean and very relaxed and soothed. Try this bath once a week and you would love it.
• Mix equal quantities of cucumber juice, rose water and lime juice. Wash your face and apply it overnight. Rinse off in the morning. This will clear the complexion and keeps the skin healthy.
• Take raw (not boiled) milk and mix a pinch of salt and little lime juice in it. Use it as a cleansing lotion.
• Mix equal quantities of lime juice, glycerin and rose water. This lotion if applied regularly at bed-time, removes pimples, blackheads and keeps the skin soft. It can be applied to other parts of the body.

7 Rules to Change Difficult Behaviour of Children

Children misbehave from time to time. This is always distressing to parents. Difficult behaviour includes using bad language, behaving aggressively or violently, destroying things, lying, stealing, refusing to cooperate such as getting dressed in the morning, going to bed at night or doing school work.

Children can misbehave by accident (Accidental misbehaviour) or on purpose (Intentional misbehaviour), and it is important to understand the difference. Sometimes, the causes of misbehaviour are easy to see or identify but at other times, they are hidden.

In majority cases, misbehaviour happens because the child does not know at is right and what is wrong. For example, a three year old throws a ball and injures another child. Here, the three-year old with the ball was excited and having fun (impulsive) and may be too young to understand that even the simplest actions can be dangerous when done carelessly (inexperience).

Nobody likes being told what to do, and that includes children. Yet, children are told what to do and how to do it all the time! So, it is not surprising that they misbehave out of resentment or anger. For example, your three-year old may hit a playmate after you insist that toys be shared, or your teenager may yell, swear and slam doors after being told repeatedly to clean up his/her room. Sometimes, we take out our own anger and frustrations on our children. We may yell at our children for being noisy when the real reason is we are angry about something….. We all do this kind of thing occasionally, but if we do it all the time, our children will respond with resentful and angry behaviour of their own.

Sometimes we push our children to achieve too much too soon. If a child is always being pressured to do things, before he/she is physically or mentally ready or are too difficult for his/her age, he/she may refuse to learn new things at home or slack off at school.

If your child suddenly refuses to do things that he/she used to do, it may be because of a real or imagined fear. For example, your child may suddenly refuse to get on the school bus because he/she has been frightened by a bully who has started taking the same bus (real), or it may be a case of resisting going to bed because "there's a bhoota in the room!" (imaginary).

Rule 1. The most important thing you can do is to be patient, avoid losing your temper and remember that love is more persuasive than punishment. Act as calmly and as thoughtfully as you can. Make sure your child knows that you love him/ her, and it does not hurt to tell them over and over again. Love brings love in return, and it is a lot harder for anyone, child or adult, to behave in ways that will hurt someone he / she loves.

Rule 2. Unsafe, destructive, dishonest or rude behaviour has to be corrected, and children must learn what the limits are. However, leave some reasonable choices to your children - what to wear, what to eat for breakfast (as long as it is healthy!) and how to schedule time for homework and play.

Rule 3. Becoming angry at a child for misbehaving because he/she did not know the right and wrong will do more harm than good. However, you should remember that you will have to keep repeating that kind of lesson many times before your child automatically thinks in terms of safety without prompting from you.

Rule 4. Suppose your child goes to your bedroom and breaks a string of pearls after being reprimanded. Obviously, he/ she is enraged, and if you respond with rage, you will be continuing a cycle of anger from which it may be difficult to escape. Try to let your child know that you understand his/ her anger and the reason for it, and try to get your child to put his/her angry feelings into words. Try to help your child think about making amends for the damage done.

Rule 5. Give your child some time alone, not as a punishment, but as an opportunity to recover from a spell of misbehaviour. Send your child to his/her room and encourage him/her to read, colour or play with a favourite toy until he / she is calmed down. Then try to discuss the behaviour problem constructively with your child.

Rule 6. If you have punished your child when you were angry, you may later think that you were too harsh. Trust your feelings. Remember that changing your mind is not necessarily a sign of weakness. Children have a very keen sense of fair play and will respect an adult who changes his/her mind in favour of greater fairness.

Rule 7. Children need the security provided by regular routines and events in a stable environment. Security and stability make it easier for children to behave in a stable and cooperative manner.

Do you want to know about my hometown?

Palakkad, my hometown lies at the foot of the Western Ghats. It was once a land with ever green tropical forests, rivers, rare birds and animals, historical monuments, and places of worship. Palakkad district was the “Granary of Kerala”, though its still
known as the same, it is no more the granary of Kerala.

Palakkad, also known as Palghat is a town and a municipality in the state of Kerala in south India. It is located near the Palghat Gap, a pass or natural depression in the Western Ghats. It would have got its name because of this ghat. Legend is that there existed a forest (kkad = forest in Malayalam) lot of “pala” trees in this ghat region from which the place got its name.

There are lots of tourist spots in this district of Kerala. This place is blessed with natural beauty and has a rich cultural tradition. You can see the various fairs and festivals held across the district.

In Palakkad town, you have an old granite fort which was built by Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1766. This fort is better known as Tipu's (Tipu Sultan, son of Hyder Ali) Fort. Malampuzha Gardens is the largest irrigation dam built on the river Bharathapuzha at the base of the hills of the Western Ghats. It is the Vrindavan of Kerala There is an aerial ropeway across the garden, a telescope tower, fresh water aquarium, boating and fishing facilities, concrete sculpture of Yakshi, swimming pool, children’s park, rock garden and snake park. Fantasy park, an amusement park is located near malampuzha gardens. Dhoni Hills is a trekking spot on the reserve forest area with waterfall and its fauna and flora. Jain Temple of Jainimedu situated close to the railway station is a historic Jain Temple. The area around the temple is known as Jainimedu. This is one of the few Jain temples in Kerala.

The SilentValley National Park, is situated in the north eastern side of Palakkad. River Kunthi descends from the Nilgiri hills above, and rushes down to the plains through a deep gorge. River Kunthi never turns brown, it is crystal clear. The Silent Valley National Park, is believed to be the sole surviving bit of evergreen tropical rainforest in the Sahya Ranges. It is a habitat of some rare species of plants , animals and birds. There is a huge wild tree of Kattualying variety which is hollow within and can hide at least 12 people in it.

Parambikulam wild life sanctuary is almost 110 kms away from Palakkad via. Pollachi. The oldest and highest teak tree “Kannimari Teak”is situated here. Three Dams exist on the hill top. The wild animals in the forest area are a sight to see.

Nelliampathy Hills which is about 80 kms from Palakkad is known as the Ooty of Kerala. An ideal spot for trekking. Seethargundu, at Nelliampathy offers a fantastic view of the valley below, a panoramic picture of Palakkad. The highest peak in the range is Nellikotta. Seethargundu got its name from the legend that Sita Devi, during the vanavasa period with Sri Rama, took a bath here.

The Punarjani Guha, a natural tunnel in the rocky cliff near the Thiruvilwamala Temple is a well known religious spot in Palakkad. It is believed that performing ‘noozhal’ -- crawling through the tunnel from one end to the other -- will wash away all of one’s sins and thus bring about rebirth. Only men are allowed to do the ‘noozhal’: women may only visit the cave. This ritual is practised on only one day per year, on Guruvayur Ekadashi.

There are so many other tourist centres are also here. Important of them are Sree Rama Temple and the Spring at Thenari, Myladumpara Choolannur peacock sanctuary, Loknayak J.P.Smrithi Vanam and Deer Park at Walayar, Shiruvani dam and Muthikulam hill in Sholayur Panchayath, the Kattilmadom Temple, Ruins of a mud fort near Chalissery, Attappady - a tribal abode and a mountain valley, Mennvallom where there are 10 steps of water falls, Kanjirapuzha Dam with an evergreen forest by name ‘Vettilachola’, Ottappalam the centre of political movements in South Malabar of the erstwhile Malabar province of Madras Presidency, Kottayi the native place of the Late Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, the doyen of Carnatic music, Thunchan Gurumadom where Thunchathu Ramanujan Ezhuthachan, the father of Malayalam Language lived in the 16th Century, Kunchan Smarakom at Killikkurissimangalam, the Kollengode Vishnu Temple and the Poet P. Kunhiraman Nair Memorial are worth visiting.

Nemmara Vallengy Vela with lots of fireworks and the elephant pageants, Manappulli Kavu Vela , Kalpathy Ratholsavam (cart festival) , Kollengode Arattu, Chinakathoor Pooram, Chittur Konganpada, Aratt Festival in Kachanamkurichy Temple, Pattambi Nercha are some of the major festivals held across Palakkad by various communities. These are worth seeing.

Kanniyarkali, a folk dance held at Elavancherry, Kollengode; Pavakkoothu (shadow play) held at Payyalore, Kollengode, Cattle Race (Kala Poottu) and cattle cart race (Kalavandiyottam), traditional ayurvedic centres are other attractions of Palakkad.
