A Google search for "macro photography definition" produced the following result:

Definitions of Macro photography on the Web:

Production of images on film that are life-size or larger. www.sederquist.com/clagloss.html

A method of getting close-up pictures of a subject by using Macro accessories attached to the camera's lens. www.aquaticadventures.com.au/angliss/Dive_Glossary.htm

Also known as photomacrography, this is the process of taking photos of small objects with a regular photographic lens at reproduction rations of 1x or greater. www.camerahouse.com.au/newsite/glossaryk.asp

Macro photography is a kind of close-up photography. The classical definition is photography in which the image on film is at least as large as the subject. Therefore, on 35mm film (for example), the camera has to have the ability to focus on an area at least as small as 24×36 mm, as this is the size of the image on the film. This is a magnification of 1:1. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macro_photography

There have so far been over 50 entries for this competition, of which no more than 2 or 3 are true macros. Will this be taken into account in the judging?

KC CHANG 19 Jul 2007

Ingrid Kolster 19 Jul 2007

Christopher Ewing 19 Jul 2007

bianca 19 Jul 2007

Jane....FIRST OF ALL Lets have a fun....okay....I will have final saying on this issue afer voting is done....Since i am the one giving away prizes i will have that right to judge which is macro and which is not....if you have a submission and it is macro please submit ...if you are unsure that you have macro capabilities please contact me in the mail...i will tell you...MUST BE MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY....and once again lets have a fun...FUN FUN FUN....

BTW i have taken thousands and thousand photos with macro lenses.....and have experience in macro photography.....Macro i am looking here MUST BE FULL FRAME .....meaning the subject have to fill the frame of the size of the photo....if the photo is in a distance and not up front will be disqualified...

Lots of members here have a cameras that have macro capabilities but that is not TRUE MACRO but may be or may not be accepted as a MACRO PHOTOGRAPHY....depend on the photo...

This is so cool! (the thread that is) 8]

This is a baby bumble bee flying near a Foxglove (digitalis) - one of my very favorite plants!

Pat 'Gracie' Merewether 19 Jul 2007

This dragon fly seems happy on my hostas. Probably because of the swarms of mosquitos buzzing around me as I took this shot.

Love you guys!

It's also hard to judge "macro" with these little thumbnails. Click on some of these photos, Jane, and view the larger sizes. You can see the hairs on the insects and tiny details in the flowers.

You really have to view the larger sizes to judge. They look totally different.

They're all beautiful!
