Jerry Stith: Leadership of the ballpoint art movement

Ballpoint pen art movement This pertains to my Ballpoint Pen Art International site and achievements!

Pen and ink has been around for over four thousand years therefore its one of the old art mediums known by mankind. A pen was used to produce a bible, manuscripts, books, documents, treaties, novels, letters, checks plus many other very important things that elevated mankind. Pen s also shaped governments, businesses, literature, musical scores, plays, opera along with many other infrastructure functions throughout our society. In addition to that they totally dominated the art world for thousands of years in the picture making world!

Modern technical advancements improved our pens, tips and inks yet pen and ink artworks have tremendously declined in popularity to say the least. The ballpoint was invented in 1888 by J.J. Load by an American yet not manufactured until 1938 by the Biro brothers out of Argentina. The Biro’s retooled the earlier ballpoint design then patented it which in turn worked its way to the Bic stationary company. In 2005 they reported their first one hundred billionth sale and that’s not bad knowing there’s only around eight billion people currently residing on this planet. What happened to all those ballpoint pens is what I’m wondering?

This list describes seventeen virtues of a ballpoint pen that supports its place in history. A ballpoint pen is the only pen system in history that operates with an oil based ink! The Uni-ball or roller-ball both have a water based ink therefore they qualify as a ballpoint pen my friends.

1. *Four thousand year pen and ink history! 2. *Most sold writing & art instrument in history! 3. *Largest undeveloped art movement in history! 4. *Longest flowing pen lines in history! 5. *Brightest colored pen inks in history! 6. *Subtlest camera-ready half tone lines in history! 7. *Only oil based pen ink in history! 8. *Strongest pen tips in history! 9. *Best carbon copy producer in history! 10. *Most reliable pen in history! 11. *Produces half tone lines from a full tone ink! 12. *Can use upside down! 13. *Works underwater! 14. *Operates in extreme hot or cold! 15. *Writes in outer space! 16. *Draws over grease! 17. *Is the easiest pen to use!

Ballpoint pen art is the largest developing art movement in history. Establishing a format or foundation of what ballpoint art represents is needed in order to become part of societies art infrastructure. Oddly enough no other person, company, corporation or organization has addressed this issue therefore that opportunity has become of my interest to me. This abbreviated list touches on many things I’ve done over the past decade to lay down a foundation for the ballpoint pen art movement. Documenting, recording or archiving all of these area’s of interest basically represents ballpoint pen art history. I’m the most prolific ballpoint pen artist, publisher, video producer and information provider via the WWW. All of these combined achievements produced historic, international, national, state and local world records which in turn makes me or Jerry Stith leader of the ballpoint pen art movement. (It doesn’t matter what I believe, it’s a matter of what I can prove.)

This up coming April marks my eleventh year here on the Internet. During that duration of time thousands and thousands of hours has gone into researching ballpoint pens, inks, steadfast ink tests, others artists sites, networks, forums and related topics pertaining to ballpoint pen art. Gathering materials and posting them on this site has been a dream come true because its provided me an opportunity to help others and to express myself worldwide. Billions of people have used a ballpoint pen throughout times for art in my opinion yet for the most part our movement is still off the grid. Why aren’t pen companies, suppliers, publishers and the art community supporting the artist?

I currently have around eighteen hundred artworks of mine posted here in order to show people different levels of progress. Many of my inklings, doodles, sketches and rendering have been published because they’re instrumental in my progress as an artist. God must have loved the common man because he’s made so many of us. Countless millions of people are young, beginners, doodlers or unskilled artists (hobbyist) therefore displaying materials of my earlier days as an artist is in order according to my thinking. People can learn quicker if they have something equivalent to their own skill level at hand. A beginner can’t relate to a masterpiece because they don’t have a handle on the various stages of development. Planning everything out using an ink pen is beyond their grasp.

Most of the artworks on this site were created using black ballpoint pen inks. Blue would be the second most used color then red. You might have noticed how few multi colored ballpoint drawings have been published in relation to the over all content. I might add that most colored works have been completed by the most advanced artists. It seems that they’ve gone that extra mile to accumulate colors in order to express themselves unlike the rest. Unfortunately most colored ballpoint pens don’t arrive via archival inks which is what art collectors cherish the most. Companies will produce more colors or archival inks if the public purchases them seeing that they’re profit oriented. The old supply and demand theory is still in effect folks.

I’ve tried to gather as many different styles, topics, techniques and creative expressions as possible in order to best represent artists from around the world. Most people seem to work from their imagination or memory according to my observations. Lots of monsters, abstracts, fantasies, people and imaginary images are being represented by folks with intermediate drawing skills. I personally like well done impressions, realism and great colors for those interested. Flowers, landscapes, animals, seascapes, still lives, portraits, family arrangements, crowd scenes, building and interior designs work for me people. What about you?

If the ballpoint pen art movement is to expand into a world class art program these area’s of interest have to be addressed. The fine art community’s weakness is largely based on a lack of business knowledge by most artists and an uneducated society. The commercial artists bring in more money than the oil industry and control most all marketing program yet folk or fine artists are often without a clue, divided, ignorant plus non capital oriented. (My people perish do to a lack of knowledge!)

A ballpoint pen has three most excellent features or unique qualities that elevated it to the best selling writing or drawing instrument in history. Think about that! Pen and ink was around for over four thousand years before a ballpoint came along yet it superseded all others in popularity because of its oil based ink delivery system. Oil based ballpoint pens can produce a half tone from a full toned ink. It can also deliver a mile long line in addition to brilliant rich colors for your creative nature.

1. Long bold lines: 2. Dark rich colors: 3: Half tones:

There are 6,700 plus ballpoint pen artworks with this forum and most of those are produced with a long non stop flowing line. Spontaneous long flowing lines are fantastic for capturing motion, quick expressions, nature, impressions and creative images within your mind. All inklings, doodles, sketches and most renderings consist of fast moving lines as seen throughout this forum. Probably over five thousands of the drawings posted here consist of such a style. Children, youth, beginners and many intermediate artists start of or learn by doing such a practice. Babis Kiliars is an impressionist and a master of that technique and he does it via many colors.

A ballpoint produces the brightest or most brilliant colors of all the pen systems. Oddly enough most all multi colored ballpoint pen artworks are completed by an advanced artist or master. There are however mono colored drawings completed with black, blue, red, green, turquoise, gold, brown, orange and pink. Pen and ink was held back historically in my opinion because of a lack of rich colors. Colored ballpoint pen artworks elevates it to the level of most other art mediums yet too many people are ignorant of the fact. Most people I’m meeting have never seen multi colored ballpoint pen drawings. There’s only four or five hundred colored drawings with this location therefore much room for improvement is need in that department.

Half tone ballpoint pen lines are the subtlest camera ready graphic line in history. The ultra, extra and fine ballpoint pen tips produce the softest, most delicate, sensitive or refined lines. Those particular lines have elevated the sensitivity level of mankind because they’re the subtlest, most eloquent, superb, exquisite or amazing art lines in art history my friends. All those executing artworks with those tips are advancing the graphic art world and producing a new standard of quality! Drawing with a extra fine ballpoint pen tip is like working with a nail. They are excellent for polishing, smoothing, blending, finishing or even starting off an art work according to my experience.

Most artists claim drawing with ink is about the most difficult of all medium. I tend to agree, therefore the challenge and victory is very delightful in my opinion.
